Using Google Analytics, I found which articles people read the most this year on BargainBabe.com. I’m surprised a few of the articles below made the list, but I’m also puzzled by a few articles that didn’t make the list. A quick look back at the community’s most popular reads.
How many of them have you read?
1. How I Moved Across the Country for $310
Who says airline baggage fees are excessive? I carefully considered all my options for moving across the country from Los Angeles to Rhode Island and calculated that flying was cheaper than professional movers, Uhaul, and the United States Postal Service. Had I needed to move furniture as well as boxes, I would have chosen one of the moving companies rather than flying. Don’t believe me? Check my math below. Keep reading.
2. Using Hydrogen Peroxide to Whiten Teeth
Thanks to my coffee habit, teeth whitening products have wiggled their way into my budget. For the last few years, I’ve been forking over cash for my favorite Crest Whitestrips at about $40 a box. It felt like a small price to pay in order to keep a bright white smile and have my yummy homemade coffee – caffè americano – too.
But, my plans to live more frugally and become debt free have opened my mind to looking at all kinds of alternative ways to save money, most recently using hydrogen peroxide to whiten teeth. Keep reading.
3. 67 Things You Should Always Buy at the Dollar Store
The other day, my non-frugal hubby came home with $40 of drugstore products that I could have bought for $8 at the dollar store. I smiled sweetly and made a mental note to keep these items in stock so he doesn’t run out. (Smiling sweetly is my secret to a long marriage.)
Although the quality of the items sold at the dollar stores varies greatly, there are some items that are just foolish to buy at regular retail price. Thanks to readers, we have grown this list from 10 to 67 items!!!! Keep reading.
4. 33 Uses for Hydrogen Peroxide
I haven’t been able to live without hydrogen peroxide. It all started after my dental emergency. Below I share 33 25 uses for the liquid in the brown bottle, H2O2. Keep reading.
5. How to Dye Your Hair with Hydrogen Peroxide
Going to a salon for professional highlights and hair coloring is expensive and time consuming. You can dye and highlight your hair with a $1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide(3%) at home. Just make sure to go slowly and read all the tips below to be safe. While a salon is THE safest way to dye your hair, it is possible to dye your hair safely at home. Of course, you could also dump a whole bottle on your head and come out with a terrible, blotchy dye job. So read these tips first! I scoured the web to make this the most comprehensive post on how to dye your hair with hydrogen peroxide. Keep reading.
6. Shopping Secrets for Costco, BJ’s, and Sam’s Club
I love shopping at Costco. I feel like a kid in a candy store especially with all the yummy samples! Below I share tips to save money while shopping at warehouse clubs. 1. Avoid food samples. As tasty as they are, the chance you will buy a new product goes through the roof when you put it in your mouth. Keep reading.
7. Is a Costco Executive Membership Worth it?
A friend recently shared that he upgraded his regular $55$50 Costco membership to the $110 $100 Executive plan, which immediately made me wonder how much money he will have to spend to make his yearly fee back. If he spends more, the upgrade was worth it. If he spends less, he should have stuck to the regular plan. Is a Costco Executive membership worth it? Keep reading.
8. How to Make Easy Fruit Leather with a Dehydrator
Reader Stephanie makes her own fruit leather, beef jerky, and more using a food dehydrator. She initially left a comment on Bobbi’s post about 10 alternative cooking methods and I was so curious I asked for more. My only experience with a dehydrator is the one my grandmother gave us (that promptly went into storage under my Mom’s house). Stephanie’s enthusiasm and her two easy recipes has me re-thinking these small kitchen appliances: Using the dehydrator to make fruit leathers is so ridiculously easy (and healthy!) it should be illegal. Keep reading.
9. How to Make Your Own Composter for Cheap
If you’ve ever contemplated composting at home you know that the plastic bins that hold household and yard waste are expensive, impossible to move, and rodent-prone. I know a low-cost solution! Store-bought compost bins, like the one above, cost more than $100. (Would you believe Home Depot sells a composter that is $398?) Once the bins fill with waste, they can burst at the seams but are too heavy to relocate. The containers are open on the bottom, enticing raccoons and rats to dig a hole for easy trash access. However, it is very easy to make your own composting bins from empty buckets. DIY power! Here’s what you need: Keep reading.
10. How to Determine Tax Deduction Value of Donated Items
It’s tax preparation time; the time of year when you get rewarded for all of your efforts of having a yard sale and then donating the leftover items to charity. You diligently got your donation receipt and filed it away with a detailed list of what you donated. Good job!
Now you have one very important last step. You need to determine how much you can deduct on your taxes for everything you donated. IRS Publication 526 “Charitable Contributions” explains how to claim a deduction for charitable contributions. And IRS Publication 561 “Determining the value of donated property” says you may deduct the Fair Market Value of the item. Keep reading.

How does Google Analytics know which BB articles I–we–have read?
Bargain Babe says
@Diane Google Analytics does not show me which articles a particular user has read. So I don’t know what you, Diane, have read except for if you leave a comment. Google Analytics shows me how many people in total have read a particular post, which is how I put together the most popular articles of 2014.
It can tell how many people have read a particular post because it counts “hits” or “impressions” to any given webpage. Then it lets me, the webmaster, see how much traffic I’ve received on a particular day, week, month, etc. Does that answer your question?
Diane says
Thank you, BB. Counting hits occurred to me later.
