With cooler temps around the corner, it’s time to dust off your sweaters and watch the “doesn’t fit anymore” or “I can’t believe I wore that” pile grow. If you are like me, you will then throw the pile into a bag, put the bag in your trunk, and then drive around with it until December 31st. At which time, you will wait in line with the ENTIRE WORLD to drop off the donation and get a tax receipt for deductions before the clock strikes midnight. Fear no more – there are several charities that offer donation pick up for clothes, furniture and more. With a quick phone call or click of a mouse, you can simply leave donations on your doorstep and a receipt will be left in its place or emailed to you. How’s that for easy?
Bargain Babe’s List of Five National Charities for Donation Pick Up
- ClothingDonations.org: A service of Vietnam Veterans of America, they’ll pick up your used clothes and household goods at your convenience and use them to support programs that address the concerns and needs of all veterans.
- The Salvation Army: By calling 1-800-SA-TRUCK or visiting SATruck.org, you can easily schedule a donation pick up or download a receipt for tax purposes. The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Centers provide spiritual, social and emotional assistance for men and women who have lost the ability to cope with their problems and provide for themselves – and are funded by your donated goods. Commonly donated items include appliances, automobiles, clothing, furniture and household goods
- Big Brothers, Big Sisters: When you donate to BBBS, you join the cause and directly support children in your community. Find your local BBBS agency to schedule a donation pick up of books, clothing, toys, bedding, sporting goods and more.
- Goodwill: While you have to drop off clothing and household items, most Goodwills make house calls for furniture or other large items that are hard to transport. Contact your local Goodwill to find out if pick-up service is available in your community. Goodwill serves those with barriers to employment by educating, training and placing them into jobs.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore: Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials, and appliances to the public at a fraction of the retail price. They are owned and operated by local Habitat for Humanity affiliates, and proceeds are used to build homes locally and around the world. Call your local ReStore to learn about arranging a free pick-up of large items. Sidenote: If you have a ReStore in town, consider yourself lucky – these places are AMAZING! We have purchased everything from carpet squares and a screen door to gallons of paint and a cool industrial filing cabinet.

I hope you will add St Vincent dePaul to your list of charities that do pickups. They use the profits from their thrift stores to meet the immediate needs of the less fortunate.

National council of Jewish women picks up your items and then sends an itemized list, back which is great for taxes. They support lots of things not just Jewish. They also have days were they open up the store to community where they can pickup items free.
