I recently saw the Ted Talk: The Ten Item Wardrobe while reading a blog post on Money Saving Mom. I have to admit, that when I first read the title I was a little skeptical. A ten item wardrobe…what!? I have more than ten bathing suits! But, after watching the video my perception changed. Maybe a ten item wardrobe could lead to a simpler life?
Can a ten item wardrobe simplify your life?
I have never been an avid shopper BUT that doesn’t mean my wardrobe is lacking. My twin sister and I are the same size and she has always loved shopping. She actually goes shopping for me and even picks out items that she knows are my style and not hers. Sometimes having a twin is awesome. LOL!
Even with the help of my sister (and the ability to steal from her closet) I find myself constantly thinking that I have nothing to wear when I have closets and drawers stacked full of clothes. How can you fix this? The video had the answer.
Limit your choices & get ready faster
This was one of the main points of the video. That often, we have many clothes but few that we actually love or wear frequently. By limiting your wardrobe to items that you love you make it easier to put together outfits that you are comfortable in. You can also do this MUCH more quickly because there are only ten items to choose from.
When I started thinking about how much time I spend picking out clothes I started to think that it may be time to go through my clothing and limit my choices.
Buy high quality clothing
While I have many clothes I don’t have many high quality pieces. Most of my clothing items were bought on sale or at discount stores. There is no problem with this BUT the video suggests that 10 quality items are better that 30 low quality items.
Example 10 item wardrobe
The ten item wardrobe refers to 10 “core” items. A sample wardrobe could be:
- One Pair of Slacks
- Two Pairs of Jeans
- Three Dresses
- Four Blouses
This does not account for “extras” which include special occasion wear, sweaters, outwear etc. BUT don’t go crazy on the extras or you’ll defeat the point.
What will you gain from a 10 item wardrobe?
- Find your own personal style
- Pick out what to wear with ease
- Less prone to impulse buys
- Be inspired to look presentable always
Would you try a ten item wardrobe?
I don’t think I could limit my wardrobe to ten items but I think that twenty would be a doable goal. I also think that at 24 years old it may be a great time to re-evaluate what I wear and buy. Switching to more high quality items could help me to save time and money. What’s better than that? Since I still haven’t
forced myself to gotten around to spring cleaning I’m thinking now’s the time to really cut down on my wardrobe. What do you think?
