With Earth Day coming up, so I thought I’d share this video by Jeff Yeager aka The Ultimate Cheapskate who shares some frugal ways to living green. In the past, I’ve doubted being green is frugal because buying solar panels and electric cars is a big expense. However, a reader shared how she got a deal on solar panels. Yeager keeps his suggestions simple which makes them doable for most of us.
Need more help saving green while going green?
We’ve got you covered! These are our suggestions to being eco-friendly without going broke.
- Learn how to eat organic on a budget.
- Stop throwing food away! Here’s how to make your own composter for cheap.
- Cut your grocery bill by growing your own food. Don’t have room at home? Learn the pros and cons of a community garden, and the profitable garden plants you should be planting.
- Save water. Collecting rainwater can help you save money. Learn to make your own rainwater barrel. But keep in mind that collecting rainwater in some states is illegal. You could also just save water from your shower for a greener way to flush the toilet.
- Save money in the laundry room by using a clothesline.
I found Yeager’s suggestion to slug interesting. After many years of using public transportation, I’m finally driving and looking to trim gas costs. Have you picked up total strangers in your car to be able to speed through the carpool lane?

Collecting rain water from your roof isn’t illegal. Stopping water that is coming across your property from other people’s property is illegal in some areas. Messing with a stream is illegal just about everywhere!

@Jenny Collecting rain water is illegal in many states. It makes no sense, right? Check out these stories: http://www.naturalnews.com/029286_rainwater_collection_water.html

@Jenny and @Yazmin That’s bizarre! I know many friends who collect rainwater runoff for their garden. It’s a great way to save water (even though it is not a quick money saver because the cost of a rain barrel can be quite high.)

Good luck with rainwater in Southern California!! What’s rain?? LOL – carpooling is great if you work regularly and leave when most people do – but I babysit my granddaughter 3 days a week and don’t have to be there until noon on two days and three on one day. And she lives 25 miles from me!!! Transportation here sucks also….Done ranting.
Yazmin Cruz says
@Michelle Ha! I feel you. I used to complain about public transportation, but now it’s driving.
Bargain Babe says
@Michelle and @Yazmin I certainly don’t miss the SoCal traffic!!!!! Here in RI, folks think “traffic” is when there are 10 cars lined up at a light. THEY HAVE NO IDEA. And I’m happy to live in a small town and small state where traffic just isn’t an issue (90% of the time). Then again, summer tourism season is about to hit, and then I do try to avoid driving as much as possible.
