My kitchen is old and outdated and I’d love to give it a facelift. But every time I start to think of one tiny upgrade, I mentally rip out the entire kitchen and go tens of thousands of dollars above my frugal DIY budget.
Yesterday I got inspired to try out one simple frugal DIY idea that transformed my kitchen. Also check out these 10 decorating ideas under $20.
I took the petals off a fake flower and screwed them on to my kitchen cabinets using the existing hardware.
Thankfully, I had a box of fake flower heads in my garage (it’s the craft lady in me), so instead of mopping the kitchen floor, I decided to give my cabinets a frugal facelift.
I happened to get these fake flowers at a Nickelodeon prop house clearance – one of the fabulous perks of living near Hollywood – so I bought them for about 10 cents a flower. I put them on 14 knobs, so my entire budget was just a bit over a dollar.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a prop house near you. Almost every estate sale I have ever been to has some fake flowers. Also, Michaels and JoAnn Fabrics put their fake flowers on deep discount several times a year and if you use their frequent coupons you can really get a deal.
If you are not into the concept of fake flowers around your knobs, you could cut or print out pictures of flowers and laminate them. I must admit that I’m not certain how these flowers will stand up to wear and tear. Laminated flowers might do better in the long run.
I’m totally loving the way these flowers perk up my kitchen. I also love the way they cover up the peeling paint that was under the knobs.

I really like your idea……so nice and makes the kitchen look happy.. I might try this if I can find flowers.

I’m not into the flowers but changing knobs can make a big difference. I did that years before I remodeled my kitchen. After the remodel, I saved the knobs and used some of them on the bathroom vanity.
If you own your home you could decoupage pictures onto the cabinets or pinstripe the doors.

I’d like to have more glass knobs in my house, but I rarely see them at garage sales and retail is usually pricey. Anyone know of a good source for cheap glass knobs?

You can get inexpensive knobs at Knobs Deal dot com.

@Myke. Great idea on the knobs. I have seen some fabulous knobs at yard sales. If you can live with an eclectic look, then you can mix and match knobs. I’ve been thinking of doing a bit of decoupage on my cabinets. Another fun idea is to paint one of the cabinet doors with chalk board paint.

So where exactly is this Nickelodeon prop house and when do they have their clearance? I live in the valley so I could get to it.

@CharleneSaavedra – To get on the email list to know when and where the Nickelodeon prop house sale will occur next, email info@showcamp.com and tell them to put you on their mailing list for the Nickelodeon prop house sale notices.
