As a kid, it was a special trip when Grandma would take me shopping at Big Lots. My little eyes would wander the endless aisles of dolls, cookies, coffee mugs and radios. I didn’t visit Big Lots often because Grandma lived far away but when I did, I was allowed to choose one thing to bring home with me. The options were limitless (why didn’t came home with a new recliner, I’ll never know)! I would spend hours weighing my options, until Grandma would make her way towards the checkout. I would quickly throw my carefully selected item in her cart, bouncing up and down until it was in my hands again.
As I got older, Big Lots became a distant memory. It would be years until I stepped into a store, and when I did two years ago, it was an oddly comforting experience. While the items I mulled over had matured (shower curtain rings instead of jelly bracelets), the variety of options was the same. And being the savvy spender that I am, I was shocked at the name brand food items I found for dollars less than my local grocery store. Big Lots and its bargain shopping quickly jumped back to the top of my list of favorite places on the planet.
Five Grocery Deals at Big Lots
Wasa crackers: I eat these crackers at an alarming rate. With hummus. With cheese. With peanut butter. They are low carb, natural and delicious. Hy-Vee: $2.88 Big Lots: $2.00
Bob’s Red Mill Quinoa: Bob’s Red Mill is a great brand of wholesome, natural foods, and their prices show it. But not at Big Lots! HyVee: $12.99 Big Lots: $11.50
Lara Bars 16 pack: I eat these protein bars like it’s my job, so the pennies add up! HyVee: $8.00 Big Lots: $6.40
Honest Organic Tea & Lemonade: Organic, natural, sugar-free. These words usually come with a high price. I’m thankful for the yummy savings. HyVee: $1.69 Big Lots: $.80
Gluten Free Products: Big Lots has a TON of gluten free products! From brands like Pop Chips, Snyder’s and Ancient Harvest, prices are anywhere from $.50 to $2.00 cheaper than my supermarket. The selection is always changing, and while I do not have a gluten allergy, it is fun to try new foods that I can afford!
