More and more retailers will be opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day for Black Friday shopping, reports MSN Money. The move to “dessert hour” will not even allow consumers to fully digest their meal before they head out to shop. I won’t be one of them.
The holiday season is a key time for most retailers as a big chunk of their revenue is made on Black Friday. By moving up start times,
retailers are dangling a carrot in consumers’ faces, trying to increase holiday spending. This year, holiday spending is expected to rise 4.1 percent, which is less than the 5.6 percent increase in 2011, says the National Retail Federation.
The stores that will open the earliest are Walmart and Sears. Not all retailers have announced their hours, but I expect other stores will follow suit to compete for your hard earned cash. Bargain Babe shares all the sales, ads, and deals at Walmart, Sears, Amazon, and dozens of other stores in her Black Friday 2012 post.
To me, the early kickoff goes against what Thanksgiving is all about: being grateful for what you have. Rushing out to shop just seems greedy and out of place on a day meant for reflection.
Now I’m not telling you not to shop Black Friday, but these are the 5 top reasons why I won’t be shopping the “dessert hour,” even though I love a good deal.
1. I can’t stand crowded malls, full parking lots, or rude people. I may just end up in handcuffs.
2. The Wall Street Journal debunked the myth of the Black Friday deal.
3. Cyber Monday is Nov. 26.
4. Free shipping day is slated for Dec. 17.
5. I feel bad for employees who must work during those crazy hours full of mass hysteria.

Frankly, I can’t think of one single item that I absolutely cannot live without that would make me want to participate in Black Friday.
And its for that reason that I get angry thinking about all those people who have to work on Thanksgiving, a day of families and togetherness, to wait on people who are so desperate to get out of their homes and score some “major” sales.

@ImJuniperNow Ditto!

I agree it does take away from the meaning of Thanksgiving and I also feel sorry for the employees that don’t get to spend time with theif families on Thanksgiving . I used to go out on black Friday butsince I live in a small town I tend to find better gifts online then I could here. It does cost more in Shipping but it gives me peace of mind not to go out in that madness

I will not, or have I ever (except once) ventured out on Black Friday to fight with my neighbors over a parking spot first, and then waiting in line to pay for something that I probably could’ve bought somewhere else and maybe paid $1 more! No, I agree that Thanksgiving is a time to be with family….shopping can wait.

@Eva Shop on FREE Shipping Day to avoid paying for shipping, or shop through a site like Ebates where you get cash back.

@Michelle Once was enough for me, too. I saw people fighting (literally) over parking. :O Awful!

The almighty $! Is it a matter of time before Black Friday moves up to Black Wednesday?

Sad. Very sad.
Yazmin Cruz says
@Diane I’ve read that retailers are contemplating turning it into a month-long shopping spree.

I have a Walmart employee in our family – Sales may start at 8:00 but they have to arrive at 5:00 P.M to stock etc – that means he has to leave home no later than 4:30 to get there – right in the middle of a FAMILY celebration. : (
