Lint from Melanie's new Target sheets
Reader Melanie wrote in with a frustrating experience she had at Target. And she is fighting it!
Hi Julia. I have a question for you. You talk a lot about Target. I am sure you are familiar with their Home products. My question is would you be surprised if you learned their sheets come from Turkey?
I bought a set of Target’s flannel sheets. I brought them home and washed them before I wanted to use them. I have a sheet cycle on my 2 month old washer and then I put them on sensor in my new dryer. Twenty minutes later I checked the lint tray as I expected some shedding being that the sheets were new. The tray was beyond being full. I emptied it and rechecked in five minutes. It was full again. I went back five minutes later and again it was full. I emptied it and started the dryer again. I checked again and the dryer didn’t seem to be warm. Well, the dryer broke (more…)
Readers had mixed feeling about whether or not I should use a $20 Target gift card that requires me to set up a wedding registry (I’m not engaged), but ultimately provided an ethical solution.
Laura’s perspective is that I’d be earning the money. “I would use it. You did go through the trouble of opening the mail, reading the exclusions, etc. Besides, if you are willing to go through the hassle of using the registry, I say go for it.”
Evie, who is boycotting Target, said even if she did patronize the store it wouldn’t be worth her time. “Since I won’t shop at Target, if I got something like that it the mail, it would go in the trash. Besides, I don’t think it would be worth the time to set up a registry.”
Mike is willing (more…)
A friend of mine commented on Facebook that she “will not be shopping at Target any more,” bringing up a fascinating question about how much we know about the politics of the retailers we patronize.
Background: media outlets reported that Target donated to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign in California, which supports a ban on marriage rights for gays. However, a progressive political site debunked the claim, saying that Target employee donations to Prop 8 had mistakenly been reported as corporate donations. Target is still under fire for contributions to an anti-gay gubernatorial candidate in Minnesota. The company released a statement saying that it favors the candidate’s business platform, not his social positions. The debate is raging outside my circle of friends; there is even a Facebook group boycotting Target.
Regardless of how you feel about Prop 8 and the right of gays to marry, my friend’s decision to boycott Target made me think about how little I know about the politics of the retailers I shop at. An About.com story shares this list of prominent brands and their political affiliations. (more…)
The latest issue of ShopSmart mag, an ad-free publication by Consumer Reports, has a great story on where to find the best prices on beauty deals. ShopSmart compared prices for dozens of shampoos, conditioners, and styling products sold at CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Drugstore.com, Target, and Walmart.
Guess which retailer had the best prices?
Target and Walmart every time!
Target and Walmart prices were $1-$2 cheaper for many products. Some were as much as $3 less!If you prefer Target over Walmart or vice versa, don’t feel bad about buying all your toiletries at either store, because many of the items below were priced pennies apart.
Here are the products and the low prices ShopSmart found. Use this as a guideline for what is a “good price” on these products the next time you shop. You can lower these prices further with coupons.
