Reader DDistefano emailed me an article about free college courses that I had to share. Here’s what he wrote:
I found this site and article in my current issue of “THE WEEK” magazine. FREE courses being offered, online, at 16 Universities, including Stanford, Duke, Princeton and Johns Hopkins, that have partnered with a newly launched company called Coursera. They are offering more than 100 free online courses this academic year. The actual address is: https://www.coursera.org/MIT, Harvard and Cal Berkeley are following suit through a nonprofit venture called edX. You can check them out at: https://www.edx.org/Apparently, for now, they do not offer “college credit” for course completion, however, they do offer “certificates of completion.”
If these courses sound familiar to you, it’s because Julia and Bobbi have written about free college courses in the past. I bet these are the same courses since they’re provided by the same universities.
Though I have not taken any of these course, I’d highly recommend them to those who are self motivated and looking to beef up their resumes. With the tough job market, having these listed on your resume can make you more competitive. I’m actually looking at taking Saturday classes to bulk up my Photoshop, InDesign, and Flash knowledge.
Would you give these courses a go or skip them because there’s no college credit (or you prefer to learn in a classroom setting)?

I’ve always wanted to enroll in an online course but i always had second thoughts on it due to website confidence issue. I was wondering how they might work, and how do i get my credentials after that?

There are many sites where you can take online courses or webinars. I used to use different sites because I couldn’t find one that would have all the features I needed. But with the release of https://kwiga.com/webinar I forgot what Coursera or Edx are. I don’t need them now. Of course these sites have a very large selection of courses but Kwiga will be on their level very soon. The advantage is that it can be connected to the site and do many other things. I think you should try and see for yourself.
