I recently asked readers if I should return a $40 sweatshirt I mistakenly received from JCPenney instead of keeping it. (I was supposed to receive a $5 T-shirt). The resounding answer was YES, YOU DOPE, YES.
Here’s the email I sent to JCP’s customer service.
Hi,
My order number is ####-####-####. I received an orange sweatshirt instead of the white v-neck Tshirt I ordered FC662-5129D V-Neck Top-Jr L White Wh. Id still like to receive the V-neck Top that I ordered and paid for. I’m happy to return the sweatshirt via the mail as long as it is at no cost to me. How can we fix the situation?
Thanks
Julia
And here is the response I received from JCP less than 12 hours later (nice response time, JCP!) A lot of readers thought JCP would let me keep the sweatshirt I mistakenly received.
Hello Julia,
Thank you for writing.
I am very sorry that your order was filled incorrectly. Fortunately, this is very easy to remedy. I will place a report detailing the error and instruct them to re-order the item. I will also e-mail you an pre-paid return label so that you can return the shirt you received in error. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns about this order.
Thanks for choosing jcp.

Not going to get to keep the sweatshirt.
Honestly, it is an extremely bright color of orange so I planned to donate it if I was allowed to keep it. For real.
About the same time I received the above response from David I also received an email from JCP with a printable UPS label, so the return shipping is paid for. I may be able to use the bag my order arrived in, but if not, I save packaging to reuse.
I’ll put the orange sweatshirt in the mail this week, and hope to have my T-shirt this week as well! Case closed. 🙂
SECOND UPDATE: I also received a Tweet from JCP saying I could keep the sweatshirt, but I tweeted back that I had already decided to return it. I’m telling you, that orange really isn’t my color!
THIRD UPDATE: Bad news. I returned the orange sweatshirt and received my missing T-shirt in the mail a few days later. But JCPenny CHARGED me for the T-shirt! I called customer service to straighten it out, and the rep said they will refund the $5 T-shirt charge when they receive the sweatshirt. I’m ticked off. Why should I have to pay a SECOND time for the T-shirt? I didn’t make the mistake in the first place! Also, JCP did not spell this advance charge out, so I was shocked to see the charge on my credit card bill.
The rep said it takes 2-3 WEEKS to get a refund. I said I needed my refund today. She put me on hold, came back and said because it was a Sunday no refunds could be processed. But she said the refund department will process my case tomorrow, so I could have a refund early this week (my credit card may take a few days to process it.) SUPER ANNOYED! Now I have to check back to see if the refund was processed correctly, and if not, spend more time on the phone with JCPenney. Maybe I should have paid more to shop at Athleta!

LOL-Is orange ANYBODY’S color???
Bargain Babe says
@Michelle Ventresca My thoughts exactly!
dan says
I bet you look good in orange, though!
Bargain Babe says
@Dan Nope, not unless it’s a darker, burnt orange. I love colors that smolder.
Cindy says
I look good in anything that’s free, lol
Diane says
@Cindy ~ Your response made me lol! 🙂
Angie says
I’m not judging you but would you have kept the sweatshirt and not written to JCP had you liked the sweatshirt?
Bargain Babe says
@Angie I don’t know! It would have been a tougher decision. I already have a few sweatshirts and I don’t wear them that often. And I still want the $5 T-shirt I ordered and paid for. So I most likely would have returning it to get the T-shirt. What would you have done if you liked the sweatshirt?

I once was undercharged by $400 on a piece of jewelry I purchased from JC Penney. I returned to the store to have it billed properly and they were sooo appreciative they gave me all kinds of goodies….yes, I know that’s a far cry from a $40 sweatshirt, but…I like Penney’s and am really happy with the changes they have made in their stores.
Bargain Babe says
@Trish WOW! Kudos to you for your honesty when a LOT of money was on the line. Was it hard to fess up to their mistake? Or did you feel like you were inadvertently stealing the necklace?
EllieD says
I happen to like orange, but it’s not for everyone. Glad things worked out to your satisfaction, including the free return shipping. I’m always glad when a major retailer handles things promptly and courteously. Props to JCP!!!
Diane says
@EllieD ~ If I can figure it out, it will happen the moment I submit this comment. What is/are “props”?
Bargain Babe says
@EllieD I hope it does all go according to plan. I prepared the return sweatshirt package with the free label JCP sent, but I still have to drop it off. (Running errands with Lucy is a chore.) Plus, I still haven’t received the T-shirt I originally paid for that was missing from the order. It’s only been a few days, so I don’t expect to receive it until Monday or Tuesday.

Everybody did the right thing and I’m happy for that. You did the right thing and so did JCP. I hope that you get your T-shirt quickly and enjoy it without any guilt about the sweatshirt.
Bargain Babe says
@Myke I hope so too! Thanks for your input Myke. I remember meeting you at the 2011 Frugal Festival Food and it is so nice to know the face behind your comments!!!
