I love to swap clothing with my friends. It’s one of the main ways that I add clothes to my wardrobe. The website Swapdom is taking this concept to a new level. Swapdom connect users all over the country looking to trade their “like-new” items. While I’m definitely into swapping clothes with friends, I’m not sure how I feel about swapping clothing with strangers.
Would you swap clothes with strangers?
The website Swapdom connects people looking to swap or trade items. Users upload photos of the items they are looking to trade and write a description. It works a lot like Ebay and Amazon, so it’s easy to navigate.
Once you’ve uploaded your items you can search the items available to swap. Swapdom does a great job of breaking the items into categories…the only problem is there aren’t that many. The browsing interface is a lot like Pinterest, so it’s fun and easy to “shop” for items you may want to swap for.
Most of the swapping items are clothing and accessories. If you’re looking to swap for shoes, purses, or other clothing items, then Swapdom is the place for you. Other items, however, are hard to come by. There were a few toys and strollers listed, but I wouldn’t count on finding these items often. The variety of items on Swapdom will change depending on what users are uploading, so if there’s only one of an item listed, you might be out of luck if that’s all you’re willing to swap for.
Like Ebay, users create profiles where previous swappers can rank them. This helps to keep sellers honest and makes the website more accountable. Personally, I would only swap with highly rated vendors to avoid running into poor-quality items.
After browsing, you can request items for swap. Basically, requesting an item is like adding it to your wish list. Once you’ve chosen the items you’d be willing to swap for you can sit back and wait for Swapdom to make a swap for you. You have 10 days to approve a swap. Once it has been approved by both parties, Swapdom sends you instructions on how to mail your item.
Shipping your items can cost between $10-$12. Swapdom charges $1-$2 per package, which is included in the shipping price.
In my opinion, a $10 shipping cost is too high for me to swap low-cost clothing items. I would only use Swapdom for big ticket items such as purses, strollers, suits, or jewelry. Swapping every-day clothing would cost almost as much as buying the item new and would certainly cost a lot more than buying clothes at a thrift store. I’ve found tons of great sweaters at Kohl’s and Marshall’s for only $10 on sale days, so for me, it wouldn’t be worth the hassle.
Swapping for purses (my weakness) would be a different matter entirely. Purses can cost hundreds of dollars. My most recent splurge, was on a $200 Coach bag I found at consignment shop. By this time next year, I may have grown tired of it and will be looking for a new bag. This would be the perfect time to use Swapdom. $10 to swap for a new purse would be much less than buying it new in store. What do you think?
