Say so long to 2012 and welcome the new year with a New Year’s Eve bash on a budget. I was inspired to start planning my get together after reading the fresh ideas the personal finance blog Fabulous & Frugal shares on the topic. They suggests making it a DYI New Year’s Eve to keep costs down, but what about those people that simply don’t have the time to make everything? Below I share my tips and tricks to throwing a party without wasting too much time or money.

Fake It, If You Can’t Make It

The trick to pulling off a DIY New Year’s Eve party if you’re short on time is to ask friends and family to pitch in without making it feel like a chore.

The Food

Party after dinner time to serve mingle-friendly bites. No need to slave over the kitchen to create a big meal. Stick to inexpensive appetizers instead of those with lobster, shrimp, or beef (unless, you can get a good deal on these items). Try these Savory Stuffed Mushrooms. They can be all vegetarian or you can stuff them with a little sausage. YUM!

You can also have guest bring one of their favorite appetizers. And all you have to do is make dessert. Don’t forget this is also a perfect time to share those food baskets you got for Christmas that you simply won’t be able to finish by yourself.

Make your own decorations

If you haven’t watched the video I shared on how to make your own sparkly 2013 headband, you have to watch it. It’s so easy! Have guest arrive a few hours early to make their own hat or headbands. You can also try to entertain kids by having them make their own noisemakers, hats, and even streamers.

No need to run out to buy materials. Reuse sparkly Christmas wrapping paper, tissue paper, and bring out the glue.

 

Drink Inexpensive Booze

In the past, I’ve suggested you have a BYOB (Bring Your Own Booze) type of party to keep costs down. This year try having signature cocktails (or mocktails). Find a friend that likes to mix drinks (there’s always one in the group) and make them in charge of concocting something tasty for all to enjoy.

I can’t wait to try this Orange Pom Fizz cocktail that can easily be made non-alcoholic for everyone to drink. My family also has extra Martineli’s from our Christmas celebration so we’re ready to toast. Still need to get your bubbly? Finding tasty inexpensive wines is not hard at all.
