Reader Kate shared how she makes money from home through a site called MTurk, a branch of Amazon.com that connects workers with brief paid online projects. Kate’s work on MTurk led to another job!
We haven’t written TOO much about making money from home, though we have covered making money at kids consignment sales, making money by watching ads, making money through spring cleaning, and even making money by renting your car to strangers!
Are you interested in making money from home?
Kate writes:
As a work at home mom, I find I spend money on everyone, but myself. So I started doing small crowdsourcing jobs on Mturk.com mostly just taking surveys or writing small articles. I trade in the cash I earn for Amazon.com credit and buy myself the Kindle books that I can’t get quickly at the library. (You know the ones that have 36 holds and only 2 copies. I do about $3.00 per day worth of work and at the end of 10 days I have $30 just to spend on myself.
I also started doing surveys on the Good Thoughts App (you can download it at the Itunes store). Every survey earns me around $1.00 and after $10, I get an Itune gift card. I’ve been downloading all my favorite songs. (Yes, Mumford and Sons- I know, I’m too old to like them). These are the way I give myself little pick me up treats that are just for me. I call them my ‘just for mom treats’.
I discovered Mturk on a Mom board and that led to a freelance writing gig as staff writer for consumerfu.com. Call me late to the party, but I never knew you could earn money writing online.
I have not used MTurk myself, but my blog friend Trent at The Simple Dollar spent an taking on MTurk projects and earned close to minimum wage. He concluded that he would only do it again if he was in a “serious financial pinch.”

I have done some Mturk……it is less than minimum wage, usually.

@Carol So are you still taking on work from MTurk? Or have you decided it’s not worth it?

I am on a community board put together by Citibank. They have discussion groups, surveys, chatboards and forums. Participating only 4 times a month qualifies you for a $15 amazon gift card. I’ve been doing this for about a year now and I’ve bought books, a cheap stroller for walking around with my granddaughter, a colander, a DVD, and other things that I wouldn’t normally buy. This is free money for me, and just enough.
Maureen Martin says
Michelle do you have any contact information about joining the community board with Citibank? I would be very interested.
Thanks!
Maureen

I think that you have to be invited…..I can’t find any contact information, in fact, when I was approved there was a process I had to go through to get on….so I’ll look into it.
Maureen Martin says
Thanks so much for checking into it for me!

It seems you need an invite, there is no contact info directly to get on this board, however, here is the website that tells you about “communispace” where you can earn $10-15 in Amazon gift cards, once you are a member (free) other companies (like Citibank) will contact you directly to sit on a board and do surveys, discussions, etc.

@Michelle Ventresca and Maureen Martin I’ve HEARD of Communispace! Just recently learned about them, though they have been around for awhile. They run private communities for various brands who want to get feedback and test products before going public with them, or to get feedback that won’t go public. I know they pay their members, but I never knew how much.
Michelle, thanks so much for following up and sharing the info so Maureen can see about joining Communispace.
Bargain Babe says
@Michelle Ventresca Sounds like a great side job, or hustle! How long does each interaction take you?
michelle ventresca says
10 to 15 minutes at the most per survey/discussion.
