I didn’t head to the post office before the price of stamps was hiked Sunday from $.45 to $.46. Unfortunately, I mixed up the dates. After realizing my mistake, I was inspired to look for ways to save money on stamps. I share 6 ways to cut costs below.
Did you buy Forever stamps before the price hike to save money?
In case you haven’t heard, the postal service also introduced the Global Forever First-Class Mail International stamp. Priced at $1.10 each, this stamp offers a single price for any 1-ounce letter to any country in the world. You can also use it to mail a 2-ounce letter to Canada.
Here’s how to keep the cost down of mailing letters.
- Reduce your correspondence. This is the easiest way to save money on postage. Instead of using snail mail, I email letters, thank you notes, and more.
- Pay bills online. If you’re still mailing out payments, make the switch to paying online. Pay through your bank or credit card. Security is not an issue, folks! Plus, you’ll get a confirmation so there’s no way to mess this up.
- Use your fax machine. If you already have a fax machine at home or work (ask for permission!), this will save you a trip to the post office. This is the perfect option when documents must be delivered immediately.
- Go vintage. You can buy stamps for 10% off, according to Consumerist.com. Visit a local stamp or coin collector to buy a bunch of old stamps.
- Buy Forever stamps. Buying Forever stamps can save you money. The new Forever stamps cost $.46 – that’s a one cent hike to mail a one-ounce letter to any location in the U.S. The trick is to buy them before there’s another price hike!
- Buy in bulk. My local Costco sells rolls of Forever stamps for a couple cents less than the post office. Not sure how much they cost now that the prices have been hiked. Anyone been to Costco lately?

@Mindy S I agree, the Global stamp is a fantastic idea! I never know how much to put on international letters so I end up dragging them to the post office.
I’m guilty of paying full price for stamps! I always buy them at the post office when I’m mailing a package or checking my PO Box. But I’ve heard that you can buy them online for a discount. I’ve seen many signs in the post office saying buying postage online is cheaper – but I’m not sure if they mean stamps or postage to send packages. I have a printer at home, so I can’t print out pre-paid labels. Perhaps they send stamps through the mail? I need to do some research.
