Brr… Baby, it’s cold outside! The easiest solution would be to turn on the heat, but it’s also the most expensive. For that reason, I’m sharing twelve ways to keep warm without spending a bunch of money during the winter months.
- Wear layers. Thermal shirts are great for this time of year. Wearing sweaters, hats, and socks also helps! I also like to wear fingerless gloves because it allows me to type and use all my tech without shivering.
- Keep blankets handy. Bundle up in blankets to stay warm without having to spend money heating your entire house. I like having several blankets at arms reach in our living room. At night, I bring out my flannel sheets and a down comforter to keep me toasty.
- Let the light shine in. Open blinds, and curtains on south-facing windows during the day to let in the sun. In the evening, make sure to close them. This provides just enough warmth.
- Drink up. I always have a hot tea or coffee on my desk when I’m working. Not only does it keep me alert, it also warms me up. Wine works, too!
- Use a space heater. There’s no point in heating up your entire home when only one or two rooms are being used. I’m seriously considering a space heater because our place is freezing during the day when I’m all alone. Any recommendations?
- Cuddle up with your partner, children, and pets. Body heat is very inexpensive and a wonderful source of warmth.
- Keep windows and doors tightly closed. If you feel cold air creeping in use a towel to block it. You should also make as few trips in and out of your home as possible.
- Get moving. Exercise can increase your body temperature. Simple stretching, running in place, and jumping jacks will do the trick. You can also bring out the mop and clean your floors.
- Let’s get physical as Olivia Newton John suggested in her hit single! Having sex can heat things up no matter how cold it is outside.
- Cover your floors. If you have tile, laminate, or wood home flooring, you may want to invest in area rugs. An area rug will help your floors retain heat.
- Don’t eat out. Not only will you save money by cooking at home, you’ll also be warming up your place. I like to use my oven more during the winter months to make bake goodies, lasagna, pizza, and more! Soups, stews and other meals that need to boil are also great options.
How are you staying warm this winter?

I do all these. I live in LA and don’t use my heater in the (mild) winter or the air conditioner in the summer (love the heat). Yes, I am frugal but I don’t like wasting resources. I use a small ceramic heater to heat the bathroom before showering.

@Deb I’m in LA also. It’s been SO cold lately. I love it! I also wash dishes by hand in warm water because I can’t seem to keep my hands warm.
