Oh, the joys of yard sailing. You never know what you might find. Each yard is an adventure. A possibility. Untold riches might be sitting on that table in the driveway, just waiting for you to say, “How much do you want for this?”
There are several yard sale items one would not readily consider to be worth digging for, but indeed, they are the golden jewels beneath old paperbacks and broken toys. Here are eight examples of treasures found:
- Electric toothbrush replacement brushes. These little gems sell for $10 a piece. They are individually wrapped, but sold in packages of four. I have twice found packages with 3 still sealed brushes. Both times, I purchased all three for a dollar, saving myself $58.
- Bookshelves. It seems that no matter how much people originally paid for their bookshelves they always sell them for (more…)

I love reading. Magazines, brochures, pamphlets, graphic novels and regular books. I’ve bought books at stores, through the internet, at yard sales and second hand stores. But some of my favorite books are the few that I “caught” in the wild, left behind by others on purpose for someone to find.
I love finding a book because I feel that someone really liked it and didn’t want it to sit on their shelf. They wanted that book to be found by someone else who would read it and love it. A well worn, dog-eared book is like a favorite stuffed animal that has been loved so much it is threadbare. How sad is the book with a great story that is only read once.
Well, I just found this totally awesome site called

For many kids, the last day of school is the best day of the year. An eternity of summer days ahead. How simply FABULOUS!
For many moms, the last day of school is the worst day of the year. An eternity of summer days ahead. How FRIGHTENING!
Sending your kids off to summer camp can be a great solution. But what if the cost of summer camp is out of your budget?
How about creating your own summer camp at home? Here’s how to:
- If you only have one child, you may want to get other families to join the fun and organization. A summer camp of only one might not be that much fun, but it still could be done.
- Decide on how long your summer camp will run. It could be one day or the entire summer.
- Come up with

Whole Foods has a reputation for being expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. If you want to save money on groceries, here are six tips to help you navigate Whole Foods so it doesn’t eat up your whole check.
- Specials – The Whole Foods I frequent in Los Angeles has specials every Thursday. Other locations have specials on different days so make sure to ask when they reduce their prices. I’ve heard grocery stores do this during their least busy day to attract more customers. We also publish Whole Foods coupons and deals shared by The Thrifty Mama every Wednesday.
- Manufacture coupons – Contrary to popular belief, organic product have coupons. Although these coupons may be harder to come by, the first place to check is the manufactures’ websites. In a previous post about natural cleaners I wrote about the Seventh Generation brand that carries products including laundry soap, baby diapers and feminine products. If you sign up for (more…)

It’s the beginning of a new year and a great time to assess my financial actions and make new budgetary policy. Here are my top five financial New Year’s resolutions:
1. Make a separate gasoline fund for each car. As gas prices go up and the number of drivers and cars in my family also rises, the money I am spending on gasoline is getting out of control. Personally, I am very good at looking at my errands and piggybacking them for the most efficient route. However, the rest of the family (especially the teenagers) are not as driven to do this as I am. I am going to get them more motivated by giving them a certain amount of gas money per week to get to classes and run errands. After that cash is gone, they will have to pay for the gas with their own money, take the bus, or stay home. This resolution has the most complexities to it, but I really want to get the gas expenses under control.
2. Make weekly menu plans and only (more…)
