My favorite tip – make stock!! Save leftover chicken bones, veggie cutting ends, and make stock out of it! It makes the house smell great, can be used in so many recipes, and is so easy to use as a great soup base as soon as it is ready! I freeze it in plastic zipper bags after making a big batch, and can then pull it out whenever I need.
I use any kind of leftovers I have in the frig to start a soup. Vegetables and any kind of meat on a bone are great “starters”, then I go from there with adding whatever I can.

Leftover gravy or stock can be frozen in ice cube trays for use later one. Just pop them out and throw them in the pot.

I try to just combine coupons and sales for the best deal. And plan ahead!
My tip is that my parents live around the corner from me so we take turns making meals. One week I plan, prep, cook, and serve dinner at my home. The following week my Mom does the same for my family. This cuts down on grocery costs, and makes cooking meals a lot easier!
I lkied you on Facebook
If you have a chunk of leftover steak or roast beef, you can turn it into a meal for your whole family. Saute onions in olive oil until starting to brown. (You can add diced carrots, celery or other veggies if you wish.) Add dry rice, whatever quantity is good for the number of people you are feeding, and saute a couple of minutes. (You may need to add more oil.) Pour in boiling water, twice as much as the rice. (1 cup rice gets 2 cups water.) Simmer covered for 20 minutes. Add in diced leftover steak or roast beef, cover and let sit off the heat for five minutes. You can serve it with gravy on the side.

Chili. Best frugal food in my house. Regular chili one night, nachos the next, chili dogs. It can last a week if u make a big pot. Cheap ingredients. Good stuff!

Finally, my frugal foodie tip would be to get acquainted with what my mom lovingly refers to as one-pot glop. Examples are soups, spaghetti sauce, and chili.
Anything that you can make in a large pot is probably going to be cheap. Also, you can make a bunch at a time and freeze it.
I read Bargain Babe email everyday. I love the freebies and helpful hints. I love St Vincent meals on wheels. Keep up the good work.
Frugal foodie tip: Use things you’d normally discard!
1. Save bones and defatted pan juices to make wonderful soup base.
2. Put vegetable scraps and vegetable cooking water into a container in the freezer and use it to make veggie stock.
3. Keep another container or freezer bag going for those last one or two spoons of vegetables, mashed potatoes or gravy; when it’s full, make “garbage soup” by adding stock, spices and some additional vegetables.
Frugal Food Tip – Crock Pot! Makes great meals for less.

Frugal tip: A good way to serve leftover rice: mix with canned soup. It makes a heartier meal of the soup, and the rice is delicious even though not fresh. It’s a fast fix if you’re on the go.

My food tip is to make a real effort to never throw food away. If produce/fruit is about to go bad, I get creative and incorporate it into dinner. I keep tabs on the “best by” dates on fridge items and use before then. And leftovers spend a max of 3 days in the fridge and then get frozen for another time.
I freeze tons of mini leftovers….single amount of taco meat, beans, etc. Then. I toss them into a chili or other new dish when I am making it…eliminating waste of food!

My frugal foodie tip is to wash, chop, and prep veggies as soon as I get home from the grocery store. Then I have the makings for salads and sides all ready for the week. I also make a batch of rice and a batch of noodles and refrigerate these. Then every night I just have to prepare the main dish. This way I have no excuses for not cooking quickly and easily at home on weeknights, and I won’t resort to takeout or going out!
Frugal foodie tip: I save bread crusts and stale pieces of bread in the freezer. When I have enough, I make croutons and bread crumbs.

Frugal food tip:
I make various gourmet vege-bean dips using fat fee plain yogurt, a spoon of mayo or ranch dressing, and few cups of mashed/purre’d white beans, and whatever leftover bits of veggies I have. (I too keep daily bits frozen in a freezer bag). For finer palates, I add sunndried tomato, olives, artichokes, spinach, ajvar/lutinitza (roasted red pepper spreads), garlic and/or cheeses, and spices to pep it up. Kids love it for dipping, and sandwhich spread (I keep it in the mayo jar to encourage them), also as a nacho & french onion soup topping. And I add to tuna/chicken/egg salads instead of mayo, and add to quiches, soups, sauces/gravies etc., as a creamed spinach base, or just smeared on cracker. It (like hummus) has actually become our mayo, sour cream and cheese replacement.
Our kids likes crusts and heals cut off thier bread so we freeze, then toast those to use as dipsticks, crackers…
I just want to say the St Vincenst is a Blessing to so many people in desperate, even dire need. I have a sailor/seamen friend who recently recieved thier meals for months after several surgeries; they were his only visitors to his dark lonely hotel room daily; thier visits and meals kept him alive and gave him back his will to live!
Godspeed and keep up the good work St Vincents!

Frugal food tip: after you use the green from your green onions, put the bottoms with the roots in a glass of water in a sunny window. You’ll grow new greens to use.
I give my kids a certain amount of $$ and have them go into the supermarket and “shop” for the food pantry in need by us. They need to use their money to buy the most they can to donate…usually mac and cheese is $1 for 3 boxes and they can purchase and get a lot for the money. Shopping “frugally” you can get a lot for the money to donate to those in need.
I just did 1 – 5. Thx!

To save money and still help others: I’ve made meals for friends. I try not to make recipes that contain tons of ingredients b/c it is too expensive. So I tend to make easy things that are still tasty but not fancy. (Like pasta or rice-based casseroles).

we reuse, repurpose and recycle EVERYTHING. i am mindful of how we use/treat everything that can possibly be reused by someone else. my daughter is of the age that she wants to hold on to everything, but she has learned that it just doesn’t work like that. we take pictures, like we just did with her bike, and we pass it along to those in need. this way she has a tangible memory of it, which gives her a surprising amount of comfort!

Frugal foodie tips: We’re not brand-loyal and shop sales. Buying a store brand product can save serious money.
We also dish out our food on plates and then immediately put what we want for leftovers in tupperware containers – I’ve found that this keeps our portion sizes smaller since we’re not going back for seconds and we get extra meals that we normally wouldn’t if we just left it sitting on the stove.

Be blessed to be a blessing… It is very important for us to share our blessings with others, specially when food speaking, no one should ever be hungry. These are a few tips that we like to follow:
-We plan our weekly menu around our Grocery store sales and try to use coupons as much as we can
-We always have our basics products in stock so we won’t to have to run to the store for a last minute buy, I’ve learned that when you are in a hurry or in need of a product you tend to buy it no matter the price
-Its Ok to buy Store brand products
-We do not waste food, there is no such thing as I don’t like it so I won’t eat it, we don’t stuff ourselves, having controlled portions helps us save
– IF we have leftovers we give them away to whoever needs them.
– and no matter what, we always have a stockpile for donations, ready to be given away to all those in need.
