Just wanted to let you know that I updated my post with dozens of pumpkin carving ideas. Be sure to look for carving ideas that scare, delight, and terrify! There are so many options that I’m not sure what my jack-o-lantern will look like this year, but I’m definitely excited to start carving.
Do you know how you’re going to carve your pumpkin? I haven’t bought one because I’m hoping to get one through our local CSA! Do you know where to buy your Halloween pumpkins and how early?
Quick tips on where and when to buy a Halloween pumpkin!
When to Buy – Like most holiday items pumpkins will be cheapest on or after Halloween. Since I’m assuming you want to carve your pumpkin before Halloween, I’d suggest buying earlier. If you’re not carving with kids (and/or don’t have to take kids trick or treating) buying on Halloween might not be a bad idea. You also may want to consider what quality of pumpkins will be available by then as well. The good ones might have all been scooped up by Halloween! Pumpkins will also last (won’t rot) for a couple of weeks as long as they aren’t carved, so if you aren’t worried about price feel free to buy earlier.
When to Carve – I would recommend carving your pumpkin only 1-2 days before Halloween. Carving the pumpkins earlier could lead to them rotting before you’re even able to showcase them on Halloween. I’ve never tried this, so I’m not sure if it’s true, but I read that spreading Vaseline on the exposed edges of the pumpkin can help it last a little longer. If anyone tries this let me know how it goes!
Where to Buy – Buying pumpkins at the pumpkin patch is most like your most expensive option, but it’s also the most fun. With the pumpkin patch you are paying for the experience as well at the pumpkin. Often, pumpkin patches offer free hayrides and even apple cider. Yum! If you’re looking for a steal, I’d recommend trying to hit a local farmer’s market or even your local grocery store. Pumpkin patch prices are often twice as expensive per pound as the grocery store.!
With Halloween just around the corner I know you’ve got other things on your mind besides just pumpkins…like candy! If you are looking for Halloween candy deals, here you go!
