Having a furry friend waiting at the door when you return from work is priceless, but the trips to the vet, the squeaky toys and the latest in pet wear can be costly. Below you’ll find tips to help you save money on your pet’s health care, food, grooming and supplies.
Pet health is top priority. If your pet needs to be vaccinated, spayed or neutered, find a free or low-cost clinic to have the procedures done. I have a friend who got her dog Max neutered for only $25 by taking him to a low-cost mobile pet clinic. If your pet’s health issues are simpler, like fleas, you can eradicate them with a vet recommend product. Generic pet meds, like generics for humans, are a cheap alternative. Veterinarian bills add up quickly so consider pet insurance. It might save hundreds of dollars if your pet were to need medical treatment.
Underfeeding or overfeeding will affect your pet’s health. Learn what the right amount of food is for his needs. I joined my pet store’s free rewards program and receive discounts and notices of sales. You can do the same and stock up when prices are low. Buying pet food in bulk at warehouse stores also saves money. Treats keep a pet happy, but can be pricey. Try making your pooch or kitty homemade treats with ingredients you already have at home. Before doing so, talk to your vet to make sure you know what your pet can and cannot eat. Some human food can be lethal.
Groom your pet yourself. Taking your pet to get groomed is easy, but depending on the size and hair length of your pet, it can easily set you back $50. Instead, invest in grooming supplies and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. Groom your pet during your free time or while watching T.V. and consider it bonding time.
Don’t splurge on supplies. Used pet carriers, leashes and food bowls can be found online for a fraction of the cost. You can also shop at thrift stores for these items. If you live in a cold climate and want to keep your dog or cat warm, you can make a sweater out of clothes that no longer fit. Basic sewing skills should do the trick and your pet will be styling in no time. Instead of splurging on toys for your pet, spend quality time with them by taking your dog out to walk. Watch Bargain Babe’s dog Bella getting super excited about her walk (video). If you’re going on vacation, forget the expensive doggy day care and opt for inexpensive pet care.
Thanks for all the tips Yazmin. I have 2 Puppies and they love the Chicken Jerky and thank goodness for Walmart and Walgreens for having them cheaper than anyone I know and the puppy pads are cheaper at Walgreens, also.
The Amanda Foundation will also spade or neuter your cat or dog for free for low income Families. My Son took his Puppies there and not only they neutered his Puppies, the gave them their shots and trim their nails. Look them up on the web, when you call them, leave a message, and they will return your call, not right away, but they will get back to you. They will request you to have a utility bill in your name, and proof of income. Good Luck!
