When I read the selection about discounts I have also had success, like yourself I don’ t win every time but I do try. One other thing I have tried is to let the merchant suggest the first discount. Sometimes I have backed off and been surprised when the discount offered was more than I had expected. Just an idea that has worked for me.
Thanks for taking the time to email me CJ! I agree, letting the merchant offer something first is a good tactic. I often do something similar – I ask for a discount that is a little bigger than I’d settle for – giving the merchant a chance to offer me something that works for both of us.

If you let them suggest a discount and you wanted a smidgen more off, could you ask for a slightly higher discount?
@Janet Absolutely! I like to pause after the merchant makes an offer, really consider it, and then make a counter offer. If you have any more ammo to your argument, it’s a good time to make them. Such as, I’m not really sure I’m ready to buy this, or I see it has a little dent, or something along those lines. Make sense?
Makes sense. Thanks, Julia!
