This question was brought to you by Online Boilers — the UK’s favourite boilers website. Specialists in combi boilers and gas boilers. Online Boilers often give their customers a discount on their appliances but you need to ring them and it takes a bit of haggling!
Reader gpjandra needs advice on where she can find discounted appliances.
What sites are available to search for bargains or discounts on appliances like stove/oven, refrigerator, washer and dryer, microwave, dishwasher, etc…? Thank you for your help as we are furnishing our first home. Need help in finding affordable, yet new appliances.
If you are tied to buying new appliances, you are more limited than if you’re open to buying used. I’d look out for sales at the hardware stores, and approach local hardware stores about price matching. You never know when someone might be able to make you a deal. You can often get 10% off for opening a new credit line, or may be able to approach a manager about a discount for paying in cash or buying in bulk (if you purchase multiple appliances from one store). Also look for steep discounts on floor models, which may have scratches or other minor blemishes.

I do not have a lot of information about discounts on appliances, but I find some good information in the Consumer Reports magazine about features of different appliances. It can be found at your local library.
Sears has had some ‘scratch n dent’ stores. Also if you live in a Habitat For Humanity, they have some “Habitat ReStore” stores which sell donated items. I’ve dropped off everything from ceiling lights to bathroom vanities. You might also talk to some remodeling contractor – they may be doing a remodel & taking out working appliances if the client is upgrading/changing something out?
It doesn’t say where gpjandra lives, but I’ve found refurbished and fabulous older model stoves/ovens that worked good as new, and looked even better than newer ones. There are discount warehouses in large urban areas, including the San Fernando Valley, where I live. If there is a ‘Recycler’ type publication in your area, check that for sales of appliances, etc., by people who are leaving their homes, either for relocation or moving to a new home, etc. For electric appliances (fridges, D/Ws, etc.) I’d try for those with an EnergyStar rating.
Always check on freecycle. I got a wonderful free fridge that way.
I got my last washer and dryer set on Craigslist. I do however use Freecycle sometimes!

Don’t know if it’s still available, but Home Depot offered $50.00 off of item at least $50 in value, if you were approved for a contractor’s credit card. You don’t have to be a contractor to qualify. My sister & son (not contractors) took advantage of the offer. I’m waiting until I have to buy a new appliance to apply for mine.
@prettybama That’s a great tip! I’m going to look for more info. Do you have a link to this deal, by chance?
We’ve had excellent experiences with Sears–both the retail store and the Sears Outlet store. The appliances we looked at at the Sears Outlet were new, with full warranties, and were sometimes hundreds of dollars less than at the retail store. When we outfitted our first house with appliances we didn’t know about the outlet, but the retail store was still the best deal we found at the time. We opened a credit account and got a percentage off. It would be worth checking a discount warehouse such as Sams Club or Costco, too.
