I have bought the Entertainment Book (when it’s on sale) a number of times, with this year’s edition probably being my last.
Thanks to Bargain Babe for introducing me to the various online daily deal sites, I find more interesting offers, better prices and since it is the business itself that commits to the offer (more actively involved) rather than what I perceive to be a business that has been ‘sold’ their involvement (passive), I feel that my purchase is more appreciated.
Yes, I did read one article where some coffee place freaked out about the high number of people who bought the offer, I think businesses today are involved because they DO want the customers coming in the door.
My sister (lives in Indiana) is coming to visit and I have bought several restaurant deals to be able to offer some options in addition to going to places we have gone before on previous visits (over 10 years ago).
My sister has a thing about ‘deals’. I sort of understand it but I am hoping the personalized certificate will be acceptable to her where a coupon from a book might not be.
And I have also bought some Restaurant.com offers, one which also offers a discount through the Entertainment Book.
And with the new reduced price for early purchase of the 2011 EB, I wonder if the new internet discount restaurant (etc) options are decreasing EB’s business that much?
I used to look forward to the EB showing up at my local Sam’s Club so I could buy them for gifts. Now, I wait until they’re on sale online.
I know not everyone uses a computer but I do wonder if it’s the proliferation of the online discount purchase options with enticing new offers showing up every day or if it’s that we are turning away from the printed format in our discounted dining options as we have done with our news sources and so on.
On the other hand, I have some friends who will not use the EB (I gave them one as a gift, as they eat out often and they passed it along to another friend) but will use discount coupons from individual restaurant websites.
I know that EB has a strong online presence but somehow I don’t get past the “book” idea, so I don’t go to their website. But I did buy a dozen Mrs. Beasley’s cupcakes when they were on sale…the deal is waiting for a special occasion to be used.
I wonder if the EB (to me) is like the weekly grocery ads that come in the mail (always there but not always exciting) while the ‘deals’ are like shopping for Christmas/birthday presents (get something different and save it for the occasion).
And the deals for my sister’s visit? The ones we don’t use (or all of them, if she sticks at my using them) can be used with friends, so it’s a win-win situation.
I certainly see things differently since I first started reading your blog in the Daily News! Haven’t met you but I’m proud of what you’ve accomplished for youself, and for all of us who follow you.
