Today is your last chance to win “Fix it, Make it, Grow it, Bake it: the DIY Guide to the Good Life,” by Billee Sharp. Not that I want to give it away. Win my review copy below.
Sharp tackles extreme thriftiness, shares a detox bath recipe, promotes bartering over buying, and that’s only half the book! I got sucked into her tips for unsticking wood drawers, making sourdough starter, and constructing your own Christmas tree decorations. You can read the 263-page book front to back, or flip to a specific topic, using it more as a reference.
Sharp’s directions are simple and easy to follow. What astounds me is the breadth of her expertise. She has suggestions and ideas for every aspect of home and life. Make no mistake, Sharp is a hard core do-it-yourselfer.
But you don’t need to convert to enjoy this book. You can learn and create new habits as much as you are open to.
To win my review copy, comment with a DIY project that you have been putting off, and why. So far, 51 people have entered the contest, so your chances are good! Or buy a copy from Amazon for $12.44 (orig. $15.95). Comment by tonight, Thursday Sept. 29, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. EST to be eligible to win. A winner will be announced Friday!
We got new siding on our house last fall. I put off painting all summer so far. It was extremely hot and now it’s extremely wet. I really don’t enjoy painting. There’s so much prep and clean up involved.
my bathroom is a mess, it needs spackling (towel rack pulled out of the wall) painting, a new light fixture, (I can barely see in there) I just can’t commit! Wish I had the funds to hire someone:(
I have SO MANY projects waiting to be done, but the biggie is cleaning/Kilz’ing/painting my basement so I can set up an art studio down there and get the mess out of my dining room!
I am trying to fix up my garage. It is a complete mess full of all of the off-season stuff that we don’t use 9 months out of the year. I am trying to declutter and donate anything we don’t use or need. My goal is to create a work area for my husband, an exercise space for our equipment, and a few shelves for our stockpile. So far that’s the only thing I have been able to organize. I’d also like to set up a gift area so I know what I have when I need a present for someone. And my kids want a space that they can keep all of their sports equipment and outdoor stuff. Fingers crossed it will be done by Christmas.
I have been putting off cleaning and reorganizing the shed. I hate that I can’t find what I am looking for when I know it is in there. Hopefully when the weather cools a little, I live in south central Texas, I am going to completely empty it and start all over. It will be a good time to sort through stuff for the yard sale we will be having in a couple of months.
I have a flower bed that is completely over run with weeds that I need to tend to. I’ve put it off for a couple of months now due to heat, then it’s been raining, raining, and more rain which has made the weeds grow to nearly waste high now. Figure I’ll wait for the winter cold to kill it all now.
I have a large box of sewing projects that I’ve been putting off for a while now, mainly because I’m still a beginner, so it all still seems a bit overwhelming! I bought a Groupon for a private sewing lesson recently, so I’m hoping that will give me the skill and confidence I need to tackle all my sewing projects!
I have put off the garage all summer. I worked on cleaning for a day in May then had seen I have 3 cracked wood rafters in the ceiling that are sagging. I tried mending but as I jacked the rafter to a square position I heard it cracking at the other end. Since then I have not done a thing due to not knowing how to replace these rafters
I have a pile of craft projects in my sewing room that I can’t seem to get to. Wool sweaters that have been felted, picture frames for jewelry holders, fabric for pillow cases. Just not enough time in the day.
Let’s see where to begin. I need to re-do my kitchen cabinets cause I have to get a new fride. I have the original fridge when I moved in. A new one can’t fit cause the cabinets are too low, small and very old. I also have to find a way to remove paint from a bath tub. The previous owner did a DIY project and painted it a dry dark, ugly green. The paints chipping off. Not good to give small children a bath in.
I have not finished the touch ups to my painting project in my full bathroom. I have all the materials but was sidetracked by helping to take care of my mother who has since passed. Now my back is out!
Also congrats on the article on you in the Rutgers magazine. I pointed it out to my husband (Rutger’s 1980) and proudly exclaimed now she is helping people save money!
I manage to keep putting off painting the interior of my house. So many good reasons.. Dont have the time because I am working too many hours, next it was dont have the money for all the paint because I got laid off. My walls have paint stripes on it from testing colors and every time someone new comes over they say ” Oh are you going to paint? and I just say yes, I just have to pick the color. I have actually painted over the wall swatches once only to paint new ones back because I REALLY DO think I will get to it one day.
My kitchen definitely needs updating. Now that I have some time (I’m retired) the process seems overwhelming! I need to start by stripping the wallpaper on one wall. Every other wallpapered room came off in tiny pieces!! Hwellp.
OH my, I have so many projects in the works. I just started re-decorating the bedroom no one lives in anymore. I bought a comforter outfit with everything from the 2 sheets, 2 shams and 2 pillowcases plus the dust ruffle, and the comforter for $6.75 at Meijer and it was 85% off. I got some paintings for $2.00 at a garage sale, and now I put off a quilted wall hanging I started for one wall ( I did start on it) Plus, I am making new curtains from fabric on sale (still in the making) I need so much help, I could use this book, it would be my “Bible to the Good Life” and I would probably use it till I die then pass it to my daughter!!! I would absolutly LOVE IT!!!
This would really be a GodSend to me!!
I have put off painting the front porch. It was
too hot this summer, and it is a job that requires
me to stand on a ladder for a long period of time. I will need to do it soon, before it becomes too cold to paint.
Need to find funds to hire someone not afeeerd of heights to paint the shotgunshack.
Re-doing my spare bedroom…I want it to be a guest bedroom but instead it has turned into a storage room
I’ve been putting off replacing the seal to the laundry room/bath sink, as to do so would require me to turn off the water to the laundry room/bath and take the whole tap and handles set-up out, replace the seals and put the whole works back. Then check to make sure the seal is tight and has no leaks. Heaven forbid it isn’t watertight the first try. Plumbing is one of my least favorite things to tackle around the house.
Landscaping! Starting from the ground up – pun intended. Reading anything I find on HGTV & other sites. Who knew there were 100s of just walk trails? Help!
Having to keep up with 2 homes and a business, organization is a must. However, I’ve fallen behind and “clutter spots” are in all three places! Finding time to declutter is hard to find. I definitely need help to get this under control.
I have so many projects to get done around the house. The first project will be to do the bathroom. The tub surround is in dire need of being replaced but I just haven’t had the funds to get it done. The bathroom also needs painting. It’s the prep work that has kept me from tackling this project. The walls needs to be cleaned and prepared with a mold resistant product. We also need a new fan installed to help with the moisture. I really need help in getting started and completing this job.
