I’d be embarrassed to watch this video with anyone but myself. It’s about how much I heart vinegar!
Now you know all about why I love vinegar…it has so many uses! Since sharing this video we’ve created a list of the best uses for vinegar. Here our top uses complete with tips from readers!
1). Use can use vinegar to get rid of cooking odors. Simply fill a shallow pan with one part vinegar and one part water. If you’d like a sweet smell you can add a few pieces of citrus peel or lemon juice to the water. This will create a pleasant citrusy scent. Then, just heat the mixture to simmering and allow it to simmer for a couple of hours replenishing the water and vinegar as needed.
2) Vinegar is also a great weed killer! Just put vinegar in a spray bottle and spray the weeds. As early as the next day, you should see less weeds. You’ll want to be careful not to spray close to plants that you want keep, however, because vinegar will kill most plants.
3) Use vinegar to remove salt from shoes. I know that I find it frustrating when my favorite pair off boots is ruined by salt. Vinegar can solve that problem Simply mix one cup of warm water with one tablespoon of white vinegar. Soak a cotton ball in the mixture and wipe it over the salt stains. You can also use a washcloth if you don’t have cotton balls on hand. You’ll want to make sure to allow the shoes to air dry because applying hit can be damaging to certain shoe materials.
4) You can soothe a bee or jellyfish sting by dousing the area with vinegar. I’ve never tried this but readers swear that it works. I wish I’d known this when I was younger! My siblings I were always getting bee stings during summertime.
5) Remove bumper stickers or price tags by wiping down with vinegar.First, soak a cloth in vinegar and press it onto the bumper sticker for three to five minutes. You will want to make sure the bumper sticker is sufficiently soaked. Next, peel off the sticker from the edges. If any sticky residue remains (it always does!) rub vinegar over the area to remove it.
6) You can use vinegar to repel ants. This is a great tip to use in spring and summer. Just spray vinegar around doors, window frames, and any other places you know are ant trails.
I’m a vinegar freak. I eat it and clean with it. Great video Julia. Especially love you in the shower fully clothed 😉
@Kelly Lester The shower scene was awkward! We didn’t know how to make it look like I was unclothed – and I certainly wasn’t about to get naked! Tighter shot nexttime?!
Awesome video! I heart vinegar too!
@Crystal Mullins Thanks!!!!
I’m sold! except wearing my clothes in the shower! Any tips on making everything not smell like vinegar when we’re done vinegarizing everything? thank you for the informational, educational, inspirational, entertaining video
@janiece That’s a great question. I got a few strong doses of vinegar up my nose while filming and it is NOT my favorite scent. The vinegar in my hair smell went away as it dried. Most of the times you’re using a vinegar solution (diluted with water) so the smell is manageable.
I too clean everything with Vinegar, you forgot to mention wood floors. mirrors and glass. Vinegar also kills mold and I also use it to clean my fruit before I eat eat, like apples and grapes.
@Denise I agree, there are so many more uses for vinegar than the 10 I shared in this video. I originally sent in 21 tips, but my editor cut it down for time. Yazmin’s post “31 secret uses for vinegar” was the inspiration for this video: http://bargainbabe.com/2011/03/09/31secret-uses-for-vinegar/
The smell goes away, once dry. And even theough the smell is strong, it’s not toxic like other cleaning agents. It’s a great cleaning agent if you are Asthmatic.
Cute video! Julia, you weren’t removing your “I Brake for Bargains” bumper sticker, were you?!!
I’ve been looking for a non-toxic way to kill the weeds that are growing from the cracks in my sidewalk. I’m going out there right now to pour on the vinegar! Thanks! Great tip.
Julia, you are the cutest! Next time for the “hair scene”, maybe lean over the sink and “wash” your hair! Or wear your wetsuit!!!
Glad I read this. Never knew it worked with weeds. I use it more for getting other people’s perfume off of my clothing when I get hugs from friends and family I haven’t seen in a while.LOL
I just used Apple Cider Vinegar to get over a cold and it worked beautifully. I feel much better.
I always use it for cleaning my drains just put the baking soda in first and rinse it with vinegar.
Vinegar is one of the most amazing products ever!
LOL next time just wear a raincoat in the shower!
The Best Spray Cleaner Ever!
This recipe was published years ago in Natural Health magazine and I’ve never seen it again. It works just as well as the commercial stuff, and much less toxic and smelly.
1 teaspoon 20 Mule Team Borax
2 Tablespoons distilled white vinegar
2 Tablespoons Murphy Oil liquid soap [OR 1/4 cup Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap (Murphy is thicker, so you need less)]
10 – 15 drops essential oil in your preferred fragrance
2 cups very hot distilled water
(1 teaspoon washing soda or water softener if using tap water instead of distilled water)
Dissolve all the ingredients in the hot water, mixing very well. Using a funnel, pour mixture into a spray bottle. Use like any multipurpose spray cleaner.
Don’t forget vinegar in a bowl to take away cooking odors
Awesome video! I also buy it by the gallon and use it in the laundry, cleaning and to rinse my hair (I “shampoo” with baking soda). It’s funny but I always feel a little awkward when I buy a gallon. But what the heck! Vive le -green- Revolucion!
@Valerie I was taking a corner of my “I BRAKE FOR BARGAINS” bumper sticker off in the video – but only because it is the only sticker I have. I re-stuck it promptly after the shot. 🙂
I have been using baking soda and vinegar to wash my hair for about 6 months. Your hair won’t smell like vinegar at all when you get out of the shower.
What’s your opinion for using vinegar to get rid of ants….it’s spring!
