I am having a garden hose dilemma. I want to repurpose an old washing machine drum or another item into a self-winding garden hose holder but need your help! How do I do this?
I live in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California. Most of my lawn is weeds, but I have potted plants that dot the yard and those, I water by garden hose.
When I am done lawn watering the plants the hose looks
like an extremely long cobra sunning itself all across our lawn. My husband doesn’t like the messy hose I’ve left behind. I don’t like to wrap the hose because it is dirty and heavy and I am short and weak. Sigh.
I’ve decided that what I need to do is get one of those garden hose holders that neatly wrap up your hose and hide it away. Preferably, I’d like to get one that is self winding.
I started out by seeing what was in the stores. I found a large metal Aladdin-type urn at Costco for about $60. Too expensive. Then I found a self-winding plastic version at Target for about $150. Whoa! Way too expensive, but exactly what I want.
Now I am looking for repurposing ideas. I’ve seen an idea to turn an old washing machine drum into garden hose storage. I just don’t know if I can find one of those drums and I’m not ready to trash my washing machine. I could wrap the hose around a big bucket filled with water, but I think the water would get really yucky and then what would I do? I could also store my garden hose by wrapping it around spools attached to the house.
I’d like to find something that’s easy for me to use, yet looks good in my yard.
Does anyone have a repurposing idea for storing their garden hose that has worked for them?
