Don’t forget to enter to win the $500 back to school savings spree with $250 gift cards donated by Sears AND Kmart, which I’m working with on this giveaway.
To recap, here is what’s on the “must have” list for back to school shopping at Sears and Kmart.
- Sears — Some of the best clothing deals are on BONGO, American Star, and US Polo Assn. I saw stylish BONGO tops and graphic tees for $10-$18, American Star vests for $23 (vests are back in style), and polos for $15-$20.
- Kmart — The back to school 2011 gear at Kmart spans everything from school supplies, to backpacks, lunchboxes, gadgets, and dorm decor. I saw notebooks, pens, and binders — school supplies that I didn’t even know Kmart sold! Dozens of backpacks and totes are $10-$30, though most fall in the $13-$20 range. There was a wide selection of laptops, netbooks, tablets and desktops, plus memory sticks and ereaders. Dorm decor included the practical (sheets, bedding) to the personal (bean bags and lava lamps). Should your kid need paper plates, baggies, and plastic utensils, Kmart’s Smart Sense line has you covered. Is it me or has Kmart thought of everything?

The smell of crayons and other first day of school necessaries in Mrs. Gwin’s kindergarten class.
Trying on every piece of clothing, pair of shoes and accessories in my closet to find the perfect back to school outfit was an annual tradition.
First, my mom, four siblings and I hit the thrift stores for back-to-school shopping. Then we hit the sales at regular stores. We started early in the morning and often came home after stores closed. Then I tried on every accessory, piece of clothing and pair of shoes to find the perfect outfits for the first week of school. Now I’d like to win the shopping spree for my 9 year old since she outgrows items nearly every two weeks!
I was raised by a deaf mom and spoke sign language but I had no other hearing friends who spoke sign language. then we moved to a suburb outside Boston where I started my first year in high-school and they happened to have quite a large community of deaf and hard of hearing students because of a large comprehensive program at the high school to accommodate all the deaf students. I immediately fell in with that group and made some best friends who I still know today. I was the only “hearing” kid in their circle and became the un-official interpreter for that group. Many of my new friends would come over to my house after school to befriend my mom. Great memories and lessons learned about humanity. I still interpret to this day as well!
While my second-grade class was outside for recess on my birthday, my mom secretly put Twinkies on every students’ desk in the classroom. When recess was over, everyone discovered the treats. Nice.
What I remember most is my 7th grade English teacher who encouraged me to try out for the Spelling Bee. I was very insecure and shy and she instilled a confidence in me that made me feel like I could do anything. I actually ended up winning and for the first time I felt proud of something I did at school.
Strongest school memory goes back to Kindergarten when I walked in our unisex bathroom and saw “Norman” sitting on the stool doing “his business.” I was embarrassed, as I was sure he was too, but I went in there to wash the glue off my hands and by golly, that’s what I did! When I was done, I walked out and shut the door. Norman finished up his “work” and eventually came out also. Wouldn’t you know it, he was a kid who’s family NEVER moved from the district. I walked across High School Graduation with Norman. Good Times….
I tweeted… 🙂
The strongest memory would have to be the day I graduated.
Organizing my desk and locker or cubbie the first week of school
Just the other day when I started my first professional year of pharmacy school. Two years down, 4 more to go!
Hmm, I would have to say it was the day I approached my 2nd grade teacher and promptly threw up on her shoes….lol. It didn’t have to be a good memory, did it?
I strongly remember the night before the first day of school. Every year I would fret over EVERYTHING – who would I sit with on the bus, who would I sit with at lunch, what should I wear, etc… But, it always worked out. I loved my school years.

My senior year in high school, I lived with my best friend, and her mother would pack a fantastic brown bag lunch for each of us every day. One day, she sent us to school with a brown grocery sack, with all of our friends’ names on it, and lunch for everyone! Can’t wait to do this for my kids.
My favorite moment was winning my last Volley Ball Game we ever played and crying with all of my friends about it being over.

Best memory is of the excitement of that first day, posing for pictures and walking to school with my sisters.

One of my favorite memories is being in the band in the half time show of the first game of the football season. The crowd, the nerves, seeing all of my friends…those were happy times!

My most memorable day was when I fell asleep in my closet trying to get dressed for school. The school called my mom asking if I was sick for the day. She asked why because she had no clue I had fallen asleep in the closet. I was only 9 years old. My mom frantically came home thinking that I was abducted or something. She searched the entire house, about to call the police and she found me in the closet. My mom felt horrible because she would always pick me up at the dance studio that I was learning at around 12am because she got off of work at 11:30pm, she worked two jobs. I followed my ballet teacher from class to class until my mom came to get me. The lack of sleep led to me sleeping in my closet while I was in the middle of getting dressed. After that incidence, it never happened again!
My fondest memories are of my mom always having our clothes laid out for all four of us in a row. My dad worked nights and when we woke up he would have a bag waiting for us on the kitchen table full of candy. My sisters and I were known for our seven course lunch boxes. It is noted under my name in my yearbook! @pharho
Mine is as a teacher, my first day of my first class. I met them when they were ten and in just a few months, they will graduate from high school!
Don’t have too many fond memories! Hmmm….I did enjoy the new clothes shopping for back to school. 🙂
