My local Albertsons had a huge sign out front the other day that screamed “We’ve cut prices on thousands of items.” Yesterday I received a mailer trumpeting the same message, with lower prices for frozen burritos (5 for $2), apple juice (now $2.49 ea), and spaghetti sauce ($1.29 ea). I bought a dozen eggs for $1.79 at Albertsons, which means they now rival Trader Joe’s on egg prices. My Ralphs flyer boasted a 99-cent sale on Colgate toothpaste, sliced bread, and eggs. Wow! Are your local grocery chains also lowering prices? The LA Times says chains are lowering prices because discounters are eating up their market share.
Perhaps more importantly…

Where i live in Alberta, Canada – grocery prices have been going up at an incredible rate.
Groceries, and beer!
I first check out the “99¢ Only Stores” for deals on food. Post cereal that sold for $3.29 at Vons was 99¢… produce is good, too. Bagged salads for 99¢? Good deal.
Then, I head to the supermarket for the rest. But their prices are dropping, too, giving the discounters a run for “our money.”
I agree with Bob. I visit the 99 cent store at least twice a week. The amount of deals I get from there are amazing. The bulk of my items come from Costco or Target/Walmart and then finally the grocery stores/Trader Joes- and I never buy from those without checking what’s on sale.
I would have to disagree about prices going down at Albertsons…They are still way higher than they were six weeks ago, and appear to be climbing. They may have lowered prices on some items, but their price on Campbells Soup, as an example, is 5 for $10.00, when I (regretfully) paid $1.75 for a can of Cream of Asparagus soup about a month ago. They certainly have not lowered their prices across the board.
i am finding Ralph’ much cheaper than Vons. give it a try
Dorothy Says;
I always shopped at Vons and their prices were prety good but I find that they are misleading on their advertisements about their gas card. They don’t tell you you have to go to certain areas to use it. I found that you had to go to Palmdale or near the airport which is too far to go to as I leave in the West Valley and they are not stocking the store as they did. I will now shop at Ralphs.
I shop mostly at Costco, Trader Joe’s, Von’s, Ralphs and Stater Brothers. However, not Albertsons, because they are still higher than most stores. I occasionally shop at the 99 cent store, as well as Walmart. Ifind if you shop around, you get the best deals. Just watch the gas, so as not to offset the price deals.
