Several states will soon begin to offer their annual sales-tax holidays. Shopping on these dates can save you from paying sales tax on clothes, school supplies, and technology just in time for back to school. Check out the list I’ve complied below of states that are participating. Start making plans now to take advantage of these days.
Note, that not all counties may participate in your state and there are item exemptions. I’ve tried my best to include as much info as possible, but you should double check with your state’s official site before shopping.
July 27-28
- Mississippi – Tax exemptions include clothing and shoes less than $100 per item are eligible. Visit the State of Mississippi Department of Revenue for a complete list of items.
August 3-4
- Iowa – Tax exemptions include select clothing and shoes priced less than $100. See the complete list of exempt items.
- Louisiana – The first $2500 for each item purchased is tax exempt. Exempt items include clothing, computers, books, school supplies and most consumer goods. Food and cars are not included. See the complete list of exempt items.
August 3-5
- Arkansas – Tax exemptions include clothing and footwear under $50 per item, clothing accessories and equipment under $50 per item, school art supplies, school supplies and academic instructional materials. See the complete list of exempt items.
- Florida – Tax exemptions include clothing, footwear and certain accessories $75 or less per item, and school supplies $15 and under. See the complete list of exempt items.
- Missouri – Tax exemptions are limited to clothing costing $100 or less per item, school supplies $50 or less, and computer software $350 or less. To see the complete list of exempt items, visit the Missouri Department of Revenue website. The sales tax rates vary throughout the state and some cities, counties and districts will not participate.
- New Mexico – Tax exemptions include include clothing and shoes less than $100 per unit, computers with a $1000 limit computer hardware with a $500. Visit the state’s website for a complete list of exempt items.
- North Carolina – Tax exemptions include clothing, shoes and school supplies $100 or less per item, school instructional materials of $300 or less per item, sports and recreation equipment of $50 or less per item, computers of $3,500 or less per item, and computer supplies of $250 or less per item. - Tennessee – Tax exemptions include clothing $100 or less, school supplies $100 or less, and computers $1,500 or less. See the complete list of exempt items.

August 4-5
- Alabama – Tax exemptions include clothing under $100 per item, school supplies and instructional materials under $50, and computers and computer software and accessories under $750. See the complete list of exempt items and find out which counties are participating.
August 10-11
- Georgia – Tax exemptions include school supplies under $20, computers and accessories under $1000, and shoes and clothes $100 or less per item.
August 11-12
- Massachusetts – Tax exempt items include most consumer items costing $2,500 or less like school supplies, computers and sports equipment. See the complete list of exempt items.

August 17-19
