The quest for a flattering swim suit is never ending. At least, until you read this post, which contains a summary of the top six slimming swimsuits in the July 2011 issue of ShopSmart mag, published by Consumer Reports. Real women, not models, tested these suits. Note, the story only considered one-piece suits as they are more flattering than two-pieces, and the mag dissed tankinis for creating “instant muffin tops.” Doh! I just bought one!
Tip: Dark colors are more slimming than light colors, and all but one of the top suits is a solid color.
1. Land’s End All-over Control Slender Grecian Swimdress, $109
The suit took 1.5 inches off the waist and has a cute skirt that is very flattering on the hips.
2. Tommy Bahama Cat Island Shirred Bandeau One-Piece, $142
Ruching hides rolls and a darker stripe down the middle appears to elongate the torso. The suit trimmed about an inch of the hips and “appeared to lift her rear.”
3. TravelSmith Fantasizer
Convertible Halter Suit, $118
A fun pattern around the bust makes this black suit interesting. It also shaved 1/2 inch off the waist and 2.5 inches off the low hip. Optional straps create different looks.
4. Spanx Woven Halter One-Piece, $198
Woven detail at the high waist instantly slims, and the spandex and nylon material took an inch off all around. A downside is the bra pads aren’t secured.
5. Victoria’s Secret Firm Control Crisscross Shaping One-piece, $132
Bunching on one side hides stomach bulges, taking two inches off the high hip and even more off the low hip. Solid fushia was more flattering than fushia with white polka dots.
6. Miraclesuit Rialto, $144
The suit made the wearer look 10 pounds lighter, taking 1/2 inch off the waist and 1 1/2 inches off the hip. A foam bra created instant cleavage.
All the suits featured cost more than $100, which is way more than I’ll pay for a suit. I forked over $30 at TJ Maxx last weekend for a new tankini and that was more than I wanted to spend. How much are you willing to spend on a swimsuit?
