Time to brag. Yesterday I went to The Body Shop and saved 70% off my total bill by stacking coupons and discounts. WOWIE! Here’s how I pulled it off. (If you don’t have a store nearby, you can shop directly through the site or get built-in discounts on The Body Shop products on Amazon.)

I bought 13 items that rang up for $162, including Seaweed Mattifying Moisture Lotion SPF 15, Seaweek Mattifying Day Cream (that I use at night), and gift-size lip balm, lip butter, body scrub, body butter, and conditioner , pictured above.

I used a Buy One Get One Free holiday promotion coupon from a mystery bag that the clerk offered me. As soon as I entered the store she told me about the promotion, so as long as you shop in store you should be able to get a similar discount. The coupons vary but I pulled a really good one! This took off $68.

I redeemed two Groupons, worth a combined $80, that I paid $40 for. This saved me $40.

I used my Love Your Body Card, which takes 10% off . This shaved off $9.20.

At the store I paid just $8.60 for all this loot. That’s $3.70 per item!

Part of the reason why I was able to stack so many coupons and discounts was that the sales clerk was willing to help! I’ve noticed this in past trips so I’m guessing The Body Shop has a corporate policy to help their customers save as much as possible. By the end of the transaction, I felt guilty getting so many great skincare products for so little! Plus, my receipt has a 20% off coupon for any in store purchase before Nov. 30, 2011. Hot dang!

Get paid for surveys, opinions, and mystery shopping

I’ve been getting a bunch of offers to make money and earn rewards by taking online surveys, being a mystery shopper, and reviewing products. I know readers have asked for more ideas about making money online, so here you go!

Note, I have not used any of these companies so make sure you know what you are signing up for. Do NOT register if it requires sharing your credit card info or paying for anything. A recent study by SteelHouse/Synovate showed only a third of Americans seek out coupons and not even half read reviews before they buy. Yowza! We need to convert these shoppers to make savvy spending decisions. So what kind of shopper are you?

44% I read product reviews before I buy.

39% I always shop with a purpose – I look online only when I’m searching for something in particular.

32% I check out coupon sites to get

the best price.

30% I browse products regularly, even when I have no intention of buying.

28% I buy only when there’s a discount.

27% I buy only when there’s an offer for free shipping.

20% I buy premium brand name products.

18% I often start the checkout process but don’t end up purchasing.

12% I never buy on my first visit to a website, even if a discount is offered.

11% I never shop online.

Plus, gender makes a difference when shopping. (Men say they are better drivers, women say they are better shoppers.) More results of the survey:

33% of women say they only buy when there’s a discount or free shipping. Men, on the other hand, look for those savings less than 25% of the time.
Women are more fond of coupon sites. 37% of women look for coupons, compared with 26% of men).
Big earners (who take home $75,000+) require discounts and free shipping more than people who make less money. 32% of big earners buy only when there’s a discount compared with 28% overall.
Big earners are buy buy premium brand names more often: 29% of the time compared with 15% of those who earn under $25,000.

If you love the thrill of bidding on an item using sites like Ebay, you must try the auction site Listia.com. Like Ebay, Listia lets you list and buy items � the best part is there are no fees to bid or join, like other sites, and no money is needed to purchase items.

Items can be purchased using credits. You will earn 100 credits for joining and accumulate more if you connect with Facebook and Twitter. Listing items and inviting friends will also earn you credits.

The amount of credits varies. If you need credits right away, you can buy more from Listia at $1 for 10 credits, but the credits cannot be cashed out. The credits you accumulate can then be used to bid on all types of items.

On the site you will find all types of items listed by category. There are CDs and DVDs, beauty items, clothing and shoes, and even auto parts. I found a Dodge/Chrysler black stereo in excellent condition with a current bid of 100 credits. There was also a Paris Hilton�s Heiress Perfume going for 1510 credits. The listing for the perfume indicated there was free shipping.

Listings for each item have all the information you need like shipping costs, if any, and the name and location of the seller. Most listings include photos. You will be notified by e-mail if you win the auction.

Like any other auction site, there are risks. Listia.com suggests looking for sellers with good feedback and/or account verification. Another suggestion is to stick to bids with free shipping as most of the scams involve shipping money. If your item requires a shipping fee, Paypal is your best option. As always, never share personal financial information.

Coupon clipping basics

I was putting together a new tab on BargainBabe.com that features long-term strategies for coupon clipping (as opposed to coupons that expire in a few days) when I realized I had never written a basic how to clip coupons post. Shocking!

There are�five steps to coupon clipping for grocery products, toiletries, and drugstore items. Here’s how I organize my coupons.

1. Subscribe to the Sunday newspaper, which is when coupons are distributed. If you don’t want to subscribe, you may live in an area that the three major coupon inserts – RedPlum.com, SmartSource.com, and PGeSaver.com – want to reach. You can inquire directly by signing up on their sites.� Online coupons are becoming more prevalent and may replace newspaper coupons someday.

2. Quickly flip through the inserts and clip any coupons that you are absolutely sure you will use no matter if the item is on sale this week. (I used to recommend clipping every single coupon and filing by category but that is not as efficient as this method).

3. File the rest of the inserts in one folder, noting the publication date. (i.e. Feb. 28, 2010).

4. Look for sales in the store circulars that arrive by mail or in your inbox if you have signed up for store email lists. Match sale items with what there are coupons for. There are two main “matching” databases that tell you when coupons were published so you don’t have to sort through each insert by hand. They are AFullCup.com and HotCouponWorld.com. To help find matches, read some of my favorite coupon match blogs, including CommonSenseWithMoney.com, CouponCravings.com, and KouponKaren.com. These blogs often do much of the work for you!

5. Take your coupons to the store and buy when the item is on sale! It always helps to be especially nice to the cashier when you are using a lot of coupons. Sometimes their cooperation can make a big difference in your total bill.

How to make big bucks doing online surveys

This is a guest post by Nicole of Nicole’s Nickels, a great coupon blog that I’ve been a fan of for awhile. I interviewed Nicole months ago about how to make money as a mystery shopper. Now she’s back with advice on how to make money doing online surveys.

If you’re looking for ways to earn some extra money each month from the comfort of your own home, online surveys may be just the thing for you! I have been doing surveys for over a year now and earn approximately $100 per month. It’s certainly not enough for me to retire but it is my gas money that I don’t have to worry about!

I love that I can sit in my pjs or while I watch TV and earn money. You can also get product tests from doing surveys where they send you not yet released products to report back about. There are a lot of survey sites out there and I am signed up with over 30. I only blog about the ones I have had no issues with.

Before signing up with your first survey company, get a new separate email address for surveys only (I use gmail). I don’t get any spam in my surveys email account but I do get a lot of survey invites which could clog your inbox. All of the survey companies I blog about are completely free to sign up for. Remember, they are paying YOU for YOUR opinions!

Many surveys are looking for people that fall into certain demographics so you won’t qualify for every survey you do. I qualify for approximately half of all surveys I attempt. Don’t get hung up on why you’re not qualifying, it’s just the way it is.

Each survey company handles payment differently. Some pay in cash while others may pay in merchandise. Read the terms and conditions as you sign up to make sure you understand how you’ll be paid and if there is a minimum amount to be paid. I make an effort to redeem every month so I can maximize my monthly earnings.
