Karen Reed is the winner of my review copy of “Enjoy Your Money!: How to Make It, Save It, Invest It and Give It”. I asked you guys who your financial role model was and Karen said it was her mother. She wrote:
MY financial role model, without a doubt, is my mother. She grew up during the depression and knew what it was like to literally have nothing. She taught me from a very early age that even pennies make dollars. Most people if they drop a penny will leave it. I pick it up and so do my kids! MY mother has taught me to not live beyond my means, which in this world is sometimes hard to do.
Karen, I can only imagine what kind of wisdom your mother shared with you after going through such a difficult financial time. It is my hope that this book adds to that knowledge and that you too will be able to share it with your kids. As I read your comment it reminded me of when I was little and my mother would also make me pick up the pennies people threw away. I think that’s how I learned to count and till this day still pick up the pennies, count them and rejoice when I hit one hundred.
If you missed my review, author J. Steve Miller’s book is geared towards young people. The book reads like a novel and includes dialogue. The book introduces the reader to a group of culturally diverse students that find themselves in in-school suspension and bond over the fact that their parents are not good with money. Their supervisor then begins to teach them about money management and how they can break the cycle of financial debt.
Miller gives advice on how to save money on groceries, how to save on car costs and how to avoid credit card debt. He suggests strategies like clipping coupons, using public transportation or using a company car, and investing your money instead of spending it.
If you didn’t win my review copy and would like to get the book for your future college student or yourself, you can order it from Amazon for $13.81.
