food waste 300x225 Minimize food waste and save money

Nick Saltmarsh / Flickr

This is a post by BargainBabe.com writer Yazmin Cruz.

I’ve thrown out $85 in spoiled food. Crazy, I know. I’m ashamed to admit that I end up throwing out rotten produce once in a while, but till know I didn’t know how much it was costing me. To stop wasting money and food I’m challenging myself to make changes in the kitchen. (More on that below.)

So what went wrong? After a couple weeks of being sick and not having an appetite (or the energy to cook), I finally got around to cleaning the fridge. I was sneakily disposing of items when my dad walked up behind me.

“How much money are you throwing away?”

6110914615 2754f35551 m How to set up a meal swap

serenejournal/flickr

In my post on snagging free and deeply discounted food, I listed a meal swap (or meal sharing) as a way to save money on food. Here’s how to set one up.

The idea behind a meal swap is that each person makes a big batch of what they are cooking and then divides it into smaller servings, packing the food so it is freezer ready. Everyone in the meal swap meets once a week or once a month (whatever is decided upon) and swaps what they have made.

Washington Monument 225x300 Reader question: is Kgb Deals legit?

Echo9er / Flickr

This is a post by BargainBabe.com Yazmin Cruz.
Reader Debbie is heading to Washington, DC and wants to go on a night time tour of the monuments. She found a deal online through Kgb Deals, but is hesitant about buying. She writes:
I subscribe to your daily emails.  I live in CA and I’m going to Washington, DC soon.  I was looking online for Night Tours of DC and found a great deal on a site called “Kgb Deals”.  They appear to be a Groupon like company.  Have you ever heard of them or done business with them?  I tried to research online and one guy said they were not legit.  There really wasn’t a lot of info about them, but they have supposedly been in business for a long time.
Thanks for your time and I LOVE your daily emails!

Ooma allows you to take control of how you communicate! Stay in touch with friends and loved ones for free with crystal-clear audio, and home and mobile services.

Here’s how it works: Ooma uses broadband Internet (Voice over IP technology) to provide free home phone service with voicemail, caller ID, and call waiting. All you have to do is plug the device, which costs $199.99, into your high-speed Internet connection and then you plug your phone into the Ooma unit. You don’t even need a computer. envelopes Separate bank accounts a good idea?

Do you "envelope" budget? Credit: PinkMoose/Flickr

A friend emailed me with a bit of budgeting advice passed on from her mother, the professional organizer Janet Fishman:

Set up separate bank accounts for: living expenses, play, long-term savings, education, charity, and retirement and have either a percentage or fixed dollar amount from each paycheck go into these accounts. Most all companies that offer automatic deposits for payroll have the ability to automatically deposit into multiple accounts. Figure out how much you need to pay taxes, divide by the number of weeks you work, and that constitutes the dollar amount to set aside for each week. Repeat this for the categories above and you will be fully prepared and organized year round!

This ads up to six accounts – or more if you set up one for taxes and other categories. Phew! That strikes me as a lot to manage. Plus, you would have a harder time hitting minimum balance requirements to keep your account free or low cost.

On the other hand, how much money you have to spend on any given thing would be crystal clear. No pushing money earmarked for one expense to cover something else. Plus, retirement is singled out, which makes it more likely that you will save for retirement.

What do you think of this modern take on the “envelope” system? Would you use it?

table 1 224x300 My $5 garage score!I went to a bunch of garage sales with a girlfriend last week looking for an oval coffee table. (I’m redecorating my living room with the money we’ll get from selling our Vespa scooter.)

I burned out on the coffee table – the furniture selection was terrible at the five sales we hit – but I did find this great little table (image right).

I knew it would fit perfectly in our entryway. But it had an awful coat of cheap lacquer, was dirty, and made of cheap wood. I was giving it the once over when the seller walked over.

“Five,” he said.

5758241022 f57ef28bbb m Should I replace my own doors and windows?

bucklava/flickr

I need to replace all the windows and sliding glass doors in my house. They are so old and drafty that with the increased price of electricity, I am literally throwing money out the window. I have a handy hubby and a sturdy son – I’ll do the research and the buying – they will do the hard physical stuff. Do you think I am biting off more than I can handle?

The house has two sliding glass doors and thirteen windows. That’s a lot to replace.

I am planning on getting
