You may not be thinking about back to school shopping as classes are just letting out for summer, but pencil this in: Aug. 11 will be National Back-to-School Saturday. The New York Times reports that Teen Vogue is pushing to add another shopping day to your calendar.
“We’re trying to create a moment of imagination and motivation,” said Jason Wagenheim, vice president and publisher of Teen Vogue to the NYT. “We saw it as a real opportunity, because for our girls, back-to-school is as important as the Christmas shopping season.”
As you may have guessed it, many retailers (whose target demographic are teens) are already on board. They include: Aéropostale, American Eagle Outfitters, Express, Guess, H&M, Maybelline New York, Pacific Sunwear of California, Quiksilver, Staples, Vans, Cover Girl, Olay, Pantene and Tampax.
The shopping day will offer young shoppers and their parents (who usually end up paying the bills) sales, free samples and events in stores and malls.
If you’re interested, keep an eye out for an iPhone app, called Teen Vogue Insider, that will be released just in time for Back-to-School Saturday.
Social media will also play a strong part in the promotion. Make sure to save the hashtag #btss on your Twitter feed to get all the updates.
The magazine’s August issue (on sale on July 3) will have a back-to-school theme, and more info will be available on teenvogue.com as the date approaches.
No word on specific sales yet. But I’ll give the event a try if the sales are worth it. How about you? What do you think about another shopping day being added to the calendar? Will you be hitting the mall on Aug. 11?
