The Fourth of July holiday is fast approaching. I’ve come up with four frugal and fuss-free activities to celebrate independence day.
- Free entertainment– Even if you are hosting a get together with friends, make sure you take advantage of the fireworks. Instead of buying fireworks, which are illegal in some states, head to local parades and festivals. Search online for free Fourth of July events and include your city and zip code for best results.
- Declare a beach day – Relax in the beach preferably in one that will have fireworks at the end of the day. In Long Beach, Calif. there are always fireworks at the Queen Mary, a ship that is said to be haunted. You can bring a light dinner and enjoy the colorful performance. Parking price at the beach are high especially during the holidays so make sure you arrive early, or use public transportation to save money on gas and parking costs. Not a beach person? No problem. Head to a local lake, river or park.
- Movie night – Don’t want to deal with traffic? Stay home and rent a movie, but not just any movie. Check out patriotic themed movie to enjoy the day. I like watching war movies so that’s what I’d go for. If you are more into comedy, try something like “Independence Day.” Make sure to check for free movie rental codes for Blockbuster Express and Redbox.
- Retail therapy – Nothing beats a well air conditioned store during the hot summer days. Check online for retail stores that will be open on Independence Day. Make sure you only pick up what you need and will use. If you don’t have any extra money to spend, go window shopping. I’m eying Old Navy’s $5 summer sale and may end up using the Groupon I bought awhile ago.
