This looks like a really fun DIY project! Just think how fun it would be to go to a holiday party in these bad boys, and how much money you’d save compared to buying designer brands. I wonder how long the glitter really stays on, though…

Even if your utility company doesn’t provide a free energy audit to find leaks, the video has a secret to doing it yourself! I really need to make time for this stuff!

My weatherizing to do list:

• Check if my utility offers free energy audits
• Finish insulating basement pipes with foam insulation that we have laying around!
• Caulk leaky windows
• Buy and install insulation strip for drafty front door

What weatherizing projects are you not looking forward to doing?

Loud. Brash. Egotistical. That’s how I would describe Ramit Sethi, the New York Times best selling author of “I Will Teach You To Be Rich”. Ramit was the keynote speaker at the Financial Blogger Conference I attended and presented at earlier this month. He kicked off his talk with this video, which ticked off a lot of frugal bloggers.

After the conference my friend, Jen from Balancing Beauty and Bedlam, chatted me up on Skype.

Jen: Ok, I just watched the video…Funny, yes, but a TOTAL insult to frugal bloggers. So, was it funny in the context of his talk, or if you are a frugal blogger sitting there, would you still have been totally insulted?

Don’t want to read into it, but thought it was pretty nervy.

I understand his point, since his whole thing is about making money and don’t get caught up in saving $3 here and there. But what he forgets is that 80% of finances are behavior and emotion and if you can’t get your spending under control in the little things, it doesn’t matter how much you make, you’ll still have money issues.

So that is my beef with that. And since you were there, wondering your feedback. (Not like I am about to take on a NYT best seller or anything, BUT……

Julia: Yeah, the video was making fun of frugal and coupon bloggers, but I didn’t take it personally. Ramit is known for being inflammatory and making waves, so I guess I just saw it as another attempt to rile people up.

I believe in what I do and I know I save my readers thousands of dollars, not the pennies he showed in his video.

Not that I would try to convince him of that. Not worth my time, if you know what I mean!

Jen: I thought that probably was the take, that even frugal bloggers would chuckle if you were there and that out of context, it was just rude, but I did laugh and kind of laughed at him since he has no clue how the mentality of saving a bit here and there adds up to a lifetime of $100,000. Not everyone can be making 6 figures by just being entreupeneurial. But glad that everyone has that chance if they want to go for it.

Buuuut…I did catch this sneak peak about a woman from North Carolina who proudly clears the shelves so not a single coupon goes to waste. “You shoulda beat me to the store,” she says. Her $10,000 stash includes 250 bottles of body wash. Good luck using that up before it goes bad! (Eyes rolling). The video has multiple previews, interspersed with brief ads.

Do you ever use the hotel safe in your room? If so, do you know about the default combination code that can make your valuables “less safe” than you thought? If the answer is “No,” then you must check out a video that was posted on YouTube on Sept. 6th by skyrangerpro.

Here is the video Glenn mentioned. It’s been viewed more than a million times!

Basically, the guy that posted the video said that they used their in-room safe. They first created a pass code, and secured their things. Then they forgot their pass code, and asked hotel management for assistance. Someone came up and punched in 000000 which was a default code that would bypass anything a guest came up on their own. This means that anyone that knows this little industry secret is capable of gaining access to your most valuable and private things (passports, money, wallet, ID, laptop, etc). He did go on to say that this may not be true of all hotel chains. But to be on the safe side, guests should check with management of the hotel they’re staying at just to be sure what their procedures are when someone forgets the pass code.
