I love finding alternative uses for everyday items. A while back I shared 31 secret uses for vinegar and now I’m sharing uncommon uses for brown sugar, garlic, and cloves to save you money on skin care, first aid and pest control.
Brown Sugar
- Fly Catcher – Forget about paying for fly paper — it’s so easy to make! All you need is brown sugar, a brown paper bag and water. Bring the same amount of brown sugar and water to a slow boil and set aside. Meanwhile, cut strips from the brown paper bag. Once the syrup is cool, dip the strips and presto! You can hang them up with paper clips to catch flies. (more…)

If you haven’t heard, Groupon is rolling out a program for those that want to be the first to score deals. The daily deal site is offering Groupon VIP by invitation only and will cost $29.99 a year.
I’m curious. Have you received an invitation? I haven’t. I don’t use Groupon often enough to be considered a loyal customer. So what are the benefits?

The mighty rubber band. Such a simple design. How would we live without it?
Here are 10 of my favorite ways to use this little elastic wonder:
- Put around a can of paint to wipe the dripping paint off the brush. Wrap the band from the bottom of the can up and over the opened top. Swipe the edge of your brush on this band instead of the lip of the can. Makes for easier clean up and less likely to have your half used can get glued to itself during storage.
- Distinguish drinking glasses. We used to go through every water glass in the house each day. Now each person gets their own colored rubber band and wraps it around their drinking glass. You can even leave them on during dish washing, but I prefer to take them off.
