The folks who brought us the controversial Extreme Couponing are back with Extreme Cheapskates (preview above). And they are looking for people to feature on their TV show! Here are snipets of emails I received from the show’s producer, Michael Petrella.

I’m the casting director for a new TLC series that is about finding unique and creative ways to save a buck. We’ve explored some fabulous ideas, like washing and reusing fabric toilet paper and dumpster diving for items such as last season’s wrapping paper and greeting cards.

We’re looking for folks who go to free events for the snacks… or take dates to places with free chips and salsa and only order water. Fun stuff like that, and also some slightly odd ideals like the homemade toilet paper or heating a whole house with human waste.

On the heels of my post about money-saving tips from the sitcom 2 Broke Girls, I’m giving you a guide to other budget-conscious TV shows you should be watching. The shows below are shock-full of frugal life lessons and are so diverse that you’re bound to find one that tickles your fancy!

I admit I don’t watch all of these shows – there’s just not enough hours in a day, but I have heard about them from others. If you don’t have cable like me, go online to find episodes.

$40 a Day
Talk-show host Rachael Ray travels the country in search of the most delectable food. The catch? The foodie must wine and dine on a limited budget. Along the way, Rachael shares her tips for eating out for less. You have to see the delectable dishes she enjoys! Airs on the Food Network.

Sandra’s Money Saving Meals
Sandra Lee is well-known for her trademark semi-homemade cooking style on the Food Network and now she is sharing budget-friendly recipes! She tries to make dishes that are accessible and affordable. She also shares tips for saving money at the grocery store and stocking you pantry. Sandra also puts leftovers to good use in the episodes titled “Round 2 Recipes” where she prepares a completely different meal. Check out the clip below.

Ten Dollar Dinners With Melissa d’Arabian
Another show to catch on the Food Network is all about teaching viewers how to make healthy meals for the whole family without breaking the bank. Melissa d’Arabian, winner of the season five Food Network Star, shows you how to make add pizazz to staples with just $10.

19 Kids and Counting
I recently learned about the Duggar family on the Today show and was surprised to find out they live a debt free life. Their story reminds me of another family – America’s Cheapest Family – but with more children! The Duggar’s can teach you a thing or two about shopping at thrift stores, cutting down costs at the grocery store, and growing your own vegetables. Airs on TLC.

Extreme Couponing
This is a show many love to hate. The show follows regular people who clip loads of coupons to save money at the grocery store. In the past, we have written about retailers changing their coupon policies because of this show’s influence. Bargain Babe has even admitted to feeling guilty because she doesn’t clip more coupons. So why watch? You can pick up tips about clipping coupons and you can bring out your scissors and newspapers while you watch. Airs on TLC.

Downsized
Todd and Laura Bruce along with their seven children are trying to stay afloat. They’re flat broke with two homes in foreclosure, and an unsuccessful contracting business. The Bruces do everything possible to keep their family of nine above the poverty line. From dumpster diving to food stamps. Get a glimpse into their life for frugal living tips! Airs on WE tv.

Design on a Dime
Designer Casey Noble shares her secrets for turning dull spaces into stylish homes. She does all this without spending a fortune.  One of her tips for cutting costs is do it yourself projects. This is great for crafty people who are tired of their shabby home. Airs on HGTV.

Clean House
Learn how to throw a successful yard sale and get cash for your unwanted items with this show. Hoarders have to declutter and get rid of their junk to get the show’s style team to revamp their home. Once the style team comes in, you’ll learn ways to repurpose pieces to fit your home. The money made at the yard sale is then used to buy items to finish the design. Airs on the Style Network.

Pawn Stars
The series is filmed in Las Vegas, Nevada, where it chronicles the daily activities at the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop operated by the Harrison family. The series depicts the staff’s interactions with customers, who bring in a variety of artifacts to sell or pawn. Watch and learn their techniques for haggling and getting a better deal. Airs on History.
