Now that we’re nearing the official onset of winter (Dec. 22), it’s time to think about what fruit and veggies areĀ in-season, i.e. cheap. This list comes from Fruits and Veggies More Matter. Click on each link below for recipes and health benefits of that particular edible.
If you aren’t able to print out this list, prices generally indicate which produce is in season. My winter favorites include oranges, clementines, pomegranates, kale, tangerines, and sweet potatoes. I also just learned a new delicious recipe for Brussels Sprouts – saute them with bacon!

Winter time is soup time, and the winter squashes are at their prime. Cut the squash in half, remove the seeds, lightly brush or rub a bit of garlic olive oil on the flesh, and roast flesh side up in the oven until fork tender. Scoop out the flesh, mash it, or put it through the blender, add whatever ingredients you like to the squash, thin it to the consistency you like with broth or cream (or milk), and enjoy with crusty bread and a green salad. And, yes, you can top it with crumbled bacon (or prosciutto), and a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt.
Kale and other winter greens can be incorporated into veggie noodle or rice soup. My new favorite rice is red rice, in combo with brown and wild rice.
