money Death of the impulse buy: Resell unused daily deals

mrcbrown / Flickr

This is a post by BargainBabe.com writer Yazmin Cruz.

Some say daily deal sites push consumers to make impulse buys on discounts they want, but don’t need. If you have buyer’s remorse, here are four sites where you can sell your unused or unwanted daily deals.

CoupRecoup – Bargain Babe wrote about this daily deal resell site a year ago. It works more like Craigslist as buyers contact each other and negotiate payment methods. To sell,

baby Budgeting for baby: Interview with Jean Chatzky

How ARE you going to put me through college? Credit: HaywireMedia/Fotolia.com

I recently spoke to Jean Chatzky of the Today Show and BabyCenter.com about budgeting for a baby, saving for college versus retirement, and hand me downs. Families spend between $163,000 and $377,000 to raise a child from birth to age 18. College not included!

Got tips on how to budget for baby? It’s import to step back and take a look at your financial picture. How much money you’ve got coming in. How much money you’ve got going out and then re-prioritizing. The fewer new things you feel you have to have, the better off you are going to be.  My kids grew up in hand me downs , on hand me down furniture. And then we passed them down. These things are meant to last much longer than the child’s life stage.

How do you figure out what you want and what you need?

4063739005 9887e33bd3 m I saved $568 by going to the junk yardI have a 14-year-old car that I adore. Despite the allure of a beautiful, new, high-MPG eco-friendly compact, I want to keep my comfy Dodge Grand Caravan running smoothly. It is paid-in-full, has low insurance rates, and can easily transport all our stuff.

I was strongly considering buying another, more recent used car to replace my van. However, after extensive research and test drives, I decided to keep my beloved caravan and fix anything that was wrong. I know the history of the car’s breakdowns and repairs. And I know what will soon need fixing. I already took advantage of a free recall replacement on a defective air bag indicator.

Since I figured I would have paid at least $5,000 to get a new-used van, I figured I could spend that much on fixing my current car and still be ahead of the game.

My first items on my to-do list:

  • Driver’s side electric mirror
  • Rear brake/turn signal/back up light unit
  • Silencer pad (that sheet of asbestos on the inside of your car’s hood)

I called the dealer and found out that to buy the parts and have them installed would cost $688. Way too much.

book financial cheating 227x300 Book review: A couples guide to financial communication

Comment to win this book!

Discovering secret credit cards, unpaid bills, and debt is a blow many couples cannot survive. In fact, money is the number one cause of breakups, says the married authors of “First Comes Love, Then Comes Money: A Couple’s Guide to Financial Communication.” Comment below to win my review copy.

Unlike most personal finance books, this one is not going to teach you to balance your budget or live debt free:

Why? Because without healthy financial communication, without a commitment to putting an end to financial infidelity, none of that stuff works. After more than thirty-five years of combined experience as financial advisers, we’ve learned that if you don’t know how to talk about money with your partner, if you don’t know how to keep financial infidelity from destroying your relationship, budgets and plans and payments won’t mean squat.

birchbox Cheap beauty samples through Birchbox

Marie the Bee / Flickr

This is a post by BargainBabe.com writer Yazmin Cruz.

There is nothing worse than spending money on full-sized beauty products that simply aren’t worth it. You can try scoring makeup freebies, but sometimes that’s not possible.

If you’re a cosmetic lover on a budget, Birchbox may be the solution for you. The start-up company charges subscribers $10 per month (including shipping!) to receive boxes with beauty samples and products, at right.

I haven’t tried Birchbox, but I am considering it because you can’t beat the price. Each box includes

125x125 MUST HAVE guide to grocery coupons and bargainsI’m making an exception to my policy to never recommend products because I finally found one that everyone who wants to save money groceries should have. Content to pay full price on food? Go to the next post.

The product is called Grocery University and it is a series of 19 audio file classes plus two PDFs that will take your couponing to the next level. If you are a beginner, this is a fast track to advanced couponing. The classes range from a brief 2:19-minute introduction to a 13:22-minute meaty class on stockpiling. All but three of the classes (including the one on stockpiling) are less than 10 minutes, so they go by quickly.

The classes are taught by Carrie Issac, a blogger and mom from Colorado who created Grocery U. I met Carrie at a blog conference and I distinctly remember that when everyone compared how much they would pay for groceries by item, Carrie’s prices were the lowest. She was the gold standard.

“How much do you pay for cereal?” a new blogger asked her.
