2273830108 4a77ca4ceb Vicks VapoRub cures toe nail fungus and dandruff?!

jbcurio/flickr

I was born around the same time that the ad on the right was printed. If you were sick, the doctor came to your house, took your temperature, and told mom to make chicken soup. Get plenty of rest and try not to worry. Beyond that, we used Vicks VapoRub.

Seems almost everyone has a jar of Vicks VapoRub in a hall closet or bathroom cabinet, waiting patiently ’til someone has such a bad cold that they relent to rubbing the sticky, smelly goo on their chest in hopes of feeling better. Guess what?

This overlooked product has additional uses that rarely get talked about, and at $3 a jar, why not try it? Of course, neither I nor anyone else can say that VapoRub can cure anything. And it goes without saying that VapoRub is for external use only and I am not a medical practitioner. Just a mom. But success stories from MakeupAlley.com shed light on six conditions that Vicks VapoRub allegedly alleviates.

netflix 225x300 Netflix raises prices 60%!!!

Netflix hikes prices by 60%?!!!!

UPDATE: I found five TV and movie services that are cheaper than Netflix.

PREVIOUSLY: Shocker! Netflix is raising its prices by as much as 60%. A whopping 80% of Netflix customers will be affected by the price hike, according to an LA Times story, which says:

The changes take effect immediately for new customers and in September for existing ones.

Basically, Netflix is separating it’s streaming and DVD-in-the-mail plans. Before, you could get 1 DVD at a time and unlimited streaming for $9.99 a month. Now, each part of that plan costs $7.99, adding up to $15.98 for both if you want to keep the same service you had previously. That is a 60% price increase. You can read more about the changes on the Netflix blog.

From a business standpoint, I can see how this makes

haircut diy man 300x225 7 Ways Being Too Frugal Costs Money in the Long Run

Ready for your DIY haircut? Credit: Andydr/Flickr

This is a guest post by David Bakke of MoneyCrashers.com.

You may know some people who spend way too much money on the newest clothes or gadgets, neglect to use coupons at the grocery stores, and pay ridiculous amounts of money for premium cable TV. I’m not one of them. In fact, I’m as frugal as they come. However, even I know that being too frugal can actually cost you more money than you’re saving in some cases. Here are seven ways it doesn’t pay to be cheap.

1. Not Going to the Doctor
Routine check-ups with your doctor and dentist will save you more money in the long run. If you get checked out once a year by your doctor, and twice a year by the dentist, you can catch problems early and treat them with far less time and money than if the problems fester. No matter how unpleasant (or costly) routine physicals and check-ups may be, they are much more pleasant than a visit to the doctor or dentist where major work or repair needs to be done.

2. Ignoring Routine Car and Home Maintenance
Consult your car owner’s manual and

money I got hit with a bank fee!

borman818 / Flickr

This is a post by BargainBabe.com writer Yazmin Cruz.

Weeks before graduation, I received a letter from my bank telling me I would no longer qualify for a student account and that I needed an average daily balance of $1,500. Boo!

With my student account I managed to avoid bank fees as long as I never stepped in to the bank and only used the ATM for my transactions. According to the bank’s letter, the fees would kick in on or after June 4. I prepared by transferring money from my savings account on June 1.

A couple days later, I was slapped with a $8.75 fee. What?!?! I couldn’t believe it. I immediately called my bank.

“Hi. I’d like to know why I was charged a fee when I met the average daily balance for my account.”

“Sure, let me check our records,” said the bank teller.

Turns out I

5398908333 d6f9ea6c79 m How do extended warranties on credit cards work?

The.Comedian/flickr

You know how many credit cards say they they double the manufacturer’s warranty? It’s the reason why I pay for major appliances with credit, not my debit card or a check, and why I almost always turn down an extended store warranty.  I’ve read about the warranty doubling in promotional materials but, until today, I never knew what this perk really meant and how it worked. Here’s what I found out.

I purchased a rather expensive window air conditioner from Sears one year and three days ago. I purchased this item from Sears only because I could not find this A/C unit anywhere else that included free shipping. I knew Sears did not have a friendly return policy. I did not buy an extended warranty because I knew my Discover card included an extended warranty.

Now it is 368 days later. I discover that

horse kids 300x262 Save money by splitting bulk compost, or even a horse!

Split the cost of owning a horse on SplitStuff.com.

Cool new website alert! Reader Annette shared a new site called SplitStuff.com that her husband started and that is most active in the Los Angeles-Orange County area. It’s still very new, so there’s not a ton of activity, but the basic premise is pretty neat so I wanted to share it. Annette writes:

It’s for people who want to get together and buy in bulk to save money. I use SplitStuff mostly to get my produce from local farmers. My friends and I get bulk prices and we take (turns) making the pickup. Other people use it to organize childcare co-ops, get group discounts on classes, or even buy a lawnmower that will be used by three or four neighbors.

I saw splits for charter cruises,

swimsuit retro 206x300 Top rated slimming swimsuits

Feel confident in these 6 slimming swimsuits! Credit: pastanaut/Flickr

The quest for a flattering swim suit is never ending. At least, until you read this post, which contains a summary of the top six slimming swimsuits in the July 2011 issue of ShopSmart mag, published by Consumer Reports. Real women, not models, tested these suits. Note, the story only considered one-piece suits as they are more flattering than two-pieces, and the mag dissed tankinis for creating “instant muffin tops.” Doh! I just bought one!

Tip: Dark colors are more slimming than light colors, and all but one of the top suits is a solid color.

1. Land’s End All-over Control Slender Grecian Swimdress, $109

The suit took 1.5 inches off the waist and has a cute skirt that is very flattering on the hips.

2. Tommy Bahama Cat Island Shirred Bandeau One-Piece, $142

Ruching hides rolls and a darker stripe down the middle appears to elongate the torso. The suit trimmed about an inch of the hips and “appeared to lift her rear.”

3. TravelSmith Fantasizer
