Looking for a hot deal – literally? PropertyRoom.com sells jewelry, electronics, coins, and even bicycles that were confiscated by cops and never claimed. I wrote about the site four years ago (as the Bargain Hunter) and figured it was time for a re-visit.
The site was founded by ex-cops who have relationships with more than 2,400 police stations and municipalities. They pick up unclaimed items in property rooms and post them online for sale. It’s pretty astounding what you can find on the site.
A pair of genuine .88ctw aquamarine pear-shaped earrings are bidding for $1. The “Steal of the Day” is a Dell Optiplex GX620 Pentium 4 Refurbished Desktop With 17″ LCD Monitor that is currently bidding at $244. There are also cameras, cars, tools, fine art, watches, and clothes.
The site is free to browse, though if you want to buy something you have to register.
Make sure to check the return policy on each item you are considering as some are not returnable. Flat rate shipping & handling to anywhere in the U.S. is $11.50, so add that to your costs. International shipping is not available. You can also pick up items in NYC, Orlando, FL, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, and Dallas.

We received a postcard for an offer that was so obviously fake, we had to laugh. This is my second brush with fraud in two weeks! Here is what it said:
We have identified you and you are now on record. We are happy to contact you directly at your residence to inform you that you have been confirmed to receive this notice for our complimentary* airfare certificate. This offer is real and is no mistake. Please respond promptly so that we may process you.
As soon as we receive your call, we will process your validation number and tell you all about your 2 round trip airfares to many exciting destinations in the Continental U.S.!

While grabbing dinner with friends, we began to talk about relationships and money. My six friends and I, all in our mid-20s, agreed it was important to be on the same page when it comes to money before getting married or moving in together, but on the subject of joint bank accounts, we were divided.
Half said they wanted a joint bank account, while the other half wanted to maintain separate accounts. I prefer a combination because I want to be in control. But that was not my only reasoning.

PREVIOUSLY: I went to my first food swap this weekend and I immediately asked myself – Should we have a food swap at Frugal Festival Food! on June 25? I am hopelessly hooked on this new trend, and you will be too. Almost everyone there was a newbie. Even the hostess of the event, Faith Landsman, had only been to two previous food swaps. Ralphs is closest to my home so when I forget something from Trader Joe’s, Ralphs it is. Here are my six secrets to saving money at Ralphs.
Clearance rack – This is one of the best kept secrets at Ralphs and other grocers. When food nears its “sell by date,” employees move it to a special clearance rack that is often hard to find. But it’s worth seeking out, because items are 50% off or more! At my local Ralphs, the rack is all the way in the back near the refrigerator section. It tends to have a lot of bread and a few blemished produce. Last time I found whole wheat dinner rolls for $.99. We ate them that night with pasta and they where yummy.

I make hundreds of chocolate-dipped pretzels and candies each year as presents, saving me many hundreds of dollars. Because I make handmade candies, I can be very generous in my gift giving and participate in food swaps. A new tool has made my gift-giving process significantly quicker (and time is money).
I have always used my microwave to melt chocolate. In fact, melting chocolate was one of the few reasons I owned a microwave. But melting large quantities of chocolates in a microwave is not very efficient and it lessens the flavor of the chocolate. I was on the lookout for a used double boiler because I certainly didn’t want to pay retail.
CVS has been issuing a lot of coupons lately.
Have you noticed that CVS is spitting out a lot of coupons in store? On two recent shopping trips I got a $3 off $15 CVS coupon on my receipt. Why not break up a shopping trip into multiple purchases to be able to use the coupon the same day?
I tested my CVS coupon theory by first paying for photos I had ordered online. BINGO! My receipt had a 25% off coupon good for non-sale items.
