I couldn’t help myself, even though watching these clips of Extreme Couponing makes me feel guilty. In this clip, a couponer named Treasure (how appropriate) runs into a big snag when a store rep tells her she interpreted the store’s coupon policy incorrectly. Are grocery stores no longer welcome of extreme coupon clippers???

Hotel freebies for me!
My first thought yesterday when I saw the huge spread of toiletries on my Radisson hotel room vanity was, “I’m totally going to take this stuff!” Somehow, the spectacular display of toiletries made me feel as if the hotel wanted me to take it all. A hotel that parts with an essential bar of soap, shampoo and conditioner has a stingy glow, while a hotel that displays no fewer than 23 items clearly has riches to share.
Which of course reminded me of a guest post from a reader who takes toilet paper from hotels to save money. I draw the line at tp and tissues, but confess my plans to stash away these goodies, which I estimate are worth about $25. It’s the biggest assortment of hotel goodies I’ve ever seen:
- toothbrush and toothpaste
- small comb
- mouthwash
- body wash
- razor and shave cream
- shower cap
- two bars of soap
- shampoo, conditioner, and lotion
- sewing kit
- cotton balls and cotton swabs
- shoe mitt
- shoe polishing kit including black polish, a buffing pad, a small brush, and a shoe horn, all in a cute carrying case!
- finally, a loofah clinched the deal. Who has ever seen a loofah in a hotel?
Do you take hotel swag home?

With gas prices on the rise, finding ways to save money on transportation expenses is a must. Last year, my dad came home and announced he was going to start biking to work. He was tired of paying $160 a month to fill up his car.
“Part of your route to work is uphill. How are you going to do that?”
My skepticism didn’t discourage him. He shopped around and found an electrical bicycle for

HOT! Free gas at CVS – Starting Sunday, you can earn a $10 gas card for every $30 you spend at CVS. Hot dang! The $30 has to come from specially marked products in the CVS circular The gas card is good at Exxon/Mobil, Shell, BP Amoco or BP Arco. When you hit $30, a coupon will print on your receipt that you redeem for the gas card. The Thursday flyer will have details on what items are eligible this week, including everything from ice cream, soda and snacks, to coffee and cleaning products.
CVS gas UPDATE: The $30 of qualifying products have to be purchased within the week they are eligible for the promotion. If you don’t hit $30 that week, you start from $0 during the next promotion week. But this means you could, in theory, get a $10 gas card every week! (more…)
I got to tour the Consumer Reports testing labs as part of the ShopSmart Summit where I learned about two common scams to watch out for. Here are seven photos to illustrate the tour.

CR tests exercise and infomercial equipment. Can you guess which has the worst track record? As the lab manager said, your diet has a greater effect than exercise on your weight, but they can't sell you a diet so they sell you a product and throw in the diet.

Car insurance makes us groan every time we think about it. Nobody looks forward to that letter that reminds us our policy is due for renewal, but fortunately there are a few easy things we can do to get the best possible deals on our car insurance.
Shop around
Many people miss out on the best car insurance deals by simply staying with their usual insurer. Use an insurance price comparison site like moneysupermarket.com to directly compare your insurer’s quote with the available other quotes on the market, and don’t be afraid to change your insurer!
Buy online
Many insurers only offer their best deals online, so get yourself connected and surf away for the lowest priced policies. If you can afford to pay for the whole policy up front, you could save some money on the interest that often applies to insurance by monthly payments.
Cut out the extras
If you feel you would be able to cope without your car for a short time, choose not to pay for a courtesy car as part of your insurance policy. Optional extras like courtesy cars and legal expenses are often unnecessary and only serve to drive up the price of your cover.
Pay as much excess as you can
The more voluntary excess you offer to pay in the event of an accident, the lower your insurance policy price will be. If you can afford to increase your excess, it could save you money as long as you drive safely and avoid accident.
Measure your mileage
One of the factors used to calculate insurance policy prices is your annual mileage. To avoid paying over the odds, make sure you don’t overestimate the number of miles you’re traveling each year. Equally, don’t underestimate your mileage either, as this would be considered an act of insurance fraud if you were caught doing so.
