The April 2011 issue of AAA’s Horizons newsletter has an article by “The Car Doctor” John Paul that outlined six pitfalls that reduce your fuel efficiency and gas mileage. How many are you guilty of?
- Old spark plugs and filters can reduce your gas efficiency by 5 percent.
- A lit check engine or service engine light means you are wasting gas. Modern cars have computers to monitor engine efficiency, so trust them.

Did you end up watching Extreme Couponing on TLC last night? I was at volleyball practice and don’t have cable, but am really curious if you liked it or not.
Time magazine calls it “more ‘Horders’ than how-to.” TV Guide has an interview with one extreme couponer who fights claims that she is a hoarder. Andhile Entertainment Weekly says the show is a canny blend of two themes of current American culture.
The first is a fascination with extreme behavior as it’s filtered through reality-TV, whether we’re talking about people who sire a lot of children (hello, Duggar family) or who stuff their bodies with a lot of drugs (hello, Intervention and Relapse). The second is the fact that a lot of people don’t have as much money as they used to. It’s the economy, not-stupid!

Graduation season is in the air. If you’ve already received graduation announcements, it’s time to start thinking of the perfect gift. Here are four helpful gift ideas to set grads on the right financial track.
1. Retirement accounts – Students seldom think of retirement because they are busy being young. This gift not only includes a chat with you or a financial adviser about retirement, but a cash gift, which we all like. Sit down with your graduate and help them start planning for the future. By starting early, the power of compounding interest and time will allow your graduate to build wealth. If they are working for a company that provides employee retirement plans like a 401k, encourage them to take advantage of it. Before they do, make sure to read Bargain Babe’s post on how to determine if your 401k plan sucks. If your graduate will be self-employed, a talk about how to open an IRA is a must. Keep in mind that whatever amount you are willing to gift your graduate is up to you and know that it will be welcomed and appreciated.

TLC’s new TV show Extreme Couponing premiers tonight at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST/6 p.m. PST. I watched four quick previews below (interspersed with ads, unfortunately) and had to stop when I got to a guy who has so much deodorant, food, and toothpaste that there is no way he and his family will be able to use it all before it goes bad. I hope he donates to charity!

The April issue of ShopSmart magazine recommends eight Merlot wines, all under $10 each. Where do you buy wine for less? The warehouse stores in Rhode Island do not sell alcohol, and none of the liquor stores in town seem to compete against each other. But buying online involves big shipping charges!
