What is the best program or website to organize and track personal finances? And are they safe?
Below I compare three big names in financial organization: MyJibe, Mint, and Quicken. The following programs meet or surpass the encryption levels that banks are required to use, which are considered sufficient to protect your personal financial data. Perhaps one of these options works for you. Disclosure: I am a Mint user.
MyJibe
MyJibe.com is a web-based budgeting system that uses virtual envelopes to separate money for $8/month (try it first with a 10-day free trial). After you deposit your income, fixed expenses like rent and utilities are separated to keep you from spending that money and to allow you to see how much you have for other things. You can add other accounts and import info from your bank, Quicken, and Microsoft Money (which has been discontinued). MyJibe tracks your income, fixed, and flexible expenses, and savings goals.

I am shopping online more and more often and have accumulated 10 tips, below, to make sure I get the right size. Don’t get me wrong, there are many things I still refuse to purchase online – like jeans – because I’m not going to leave it to chance that the cut will make my butt look bigger (a good thing). Here’s how I dramatically increase the odds that what I buy online will fit.
1. I don’t take risks with clothes. I shop for colors I have in my closet and cuts that I know flatter me. Yes, that V-neck cross over looks cute on the model, but I never wear the one that I already own. I stay away from material I know I don’t like (silk always feels dirty to me) and make sure the item fits into outfits I already wear. If I can’t picture what I’ll wear with it, it’s a goner.
2. I take a mental check. Was this item already on my to buy list, or am I acting impulsively? How much do I need this item and how much do I want it? (more…)

Here are five ways to file for free. Get tax forms here or visit your local post office. The deadline to file taxes this year is Apr. 18, 2011.
1. IRS Free File. If you make less than $58,000, you are eligible to file your federal taxes for free using the IRS Free File program. Some 100 million Americans are eligible to use IRS Free File. The program walks you through the entire process and does the math for you. You can get a refund in as little as 10 days if you opt for direct deposit. This service is also available in Spanish.
To file your taxes for free click on the above link, then click on “Free File” on the right under Filing and Payments. Choose one of the Free File Alliance members that comes up that meets your tax needs. Once you pick a company you’ll be transferred to the company’s website to work on and file your taxes. If you do not have Internet access at home, there are many locations across the country where you can use the Free File software.
