Do you buy a real Christmas tree or unfurl a fake? A childhood friend who is now a certified health counselor devoted her November newsletter to summing up the pros and cons of each. Her conclusion? Fake trees aren’t very green!
Fake trees are cheaper if you buy a new one every 10-15 years. But they can contain many nasty chemicals that may give off lead dust, according to a 2008 EPA study.
Real trees support the American economy, absorb carbon dioxide while growing, and can be recycled into mulch. They are expensive, however, and suck up more fuel over their lifespan.
