Magazine sale - Amazon has a promotion going on through Dec. 11, 2010 where you get $10 back when you buy $30 in magazines. That means you can get a cheap magazine as a present! A year of Vanity Fair is $15, a year of The New Yorker is $40 (a little high), Maxim is $10. Better Homes & Gardens
is $6. Watch for auto-renewal, which means near the end of the term Amazon will charge your credit card for a second year at a higher rate. You’ll get the $10 by Dec. 19 and you can use it for anything on Amazon.com.

A recent post on WalletPop, a site I blog for, triggered this money morality question. Are people giving Groupons and daily deal vouchers from sites like Tippr and SocialBuy as gifts this year? Daily deal sites sell vouchers at steep discounts – sometimes as much as 90% off. Is it tacky to give someone a $25 gift voucher to, say a nearby restaurant or yoga studio, if you only paid $5 for it?
If you give a Groupon or daily deal voucher, watch out for expiration dates. These vouchers are not gift cards, so they are not protected by a federal law that requires them to be good for a minimum of five years. The vouchers are usually good for about (more…)
Whether or not you sleep in hostels when you travel, you can take advantage of an awesome Christmas contest run by HostelBookers.com, a site devoted to budget accommodations. Prizes include an iPad, Ryanair vouchers, a hostel stay, a scuba diving course, Amazon gift cards, and more.
Every day, Dec. 1-24, 2010 HostelBookers will post a question on their Facebook fan page. To enter to win, email the correct answer to christmas (at) hostelbookers (dot) com with your full name and which HostelBookers Facebook group you belong to. The “win prizes” tab on the HostelBookers facebook page has more info.
Winners will be picked from qualifying entries and announced, along with the prize, the following day on Facebook and via the HostelBookers blog. So far winners have come from all over the world.
HostelBookers is unique among budget accommodation websites because it does not apply a service charge. The site claims to be, on average, 8.7% less expensive than competitors. The site features more than 20,000 hostels across 3,500 destinations around the world.

UPDATE: Yesterday this post had a number of bad links. They have all been corrected. Apologies for the errors!
I rounded up all 22 relevant posts from this year and last on Christmas and divided them into four categories, including Gifts, Shopping Tips, Cutting Corners, And Everything Else.
Gifts
- The gift card freebies and bonus this year are pretty incredible. Tons of retailers are throwing in extra $5 gift card when you buy a $25 gift card, or $10 when you buy $50. Just watch the expiration dates on the “bonus” gift cards, which are exempt from new federal laws that say gift cards cannot expire for at least five years.
- Stocking stuffers for your favorite clotheshorse or girl friend. They pair nicely with a gift card to a clothing store or an outfit you picked out.
- Five creative ways to wrap presents that include ideas you’ve never heard before, guaranteed.
- 10 last minute gifts from 2009 make thoughtful presents and this year’s top unusual gifts. (more…)

If you have a dog or cat, finding them a safe and comfortable home over Christmas and the winter holidays is a challenge. Here are the pros and cons of your seven best options. Thanks to my Mom who gave me the idea for this post!
Option No. 1 is to find a friend who can take care of your pet(s) at their home. Offer to drop off and pick up Fido to reduce the burden on your friend. A friend will rarely ask for money, but be sure to repay the favor by taking care of their animals at a later date, or by showing your appreciation with a token gift. This can be a great arrangement if the friend and animal like each others’ company. If the friend has their own pets, do they all get along? Cost: free plus gift or pet sitting for them.
Option No. 2 is to find a (more…)

Wanting to save money in this economy is a no-brainer, but being able to do it is another thing. That’s where author Kathy Spencer comes in. Her 237-page book How to Shop for Free: Shopping Secrets for Smart Women Who Love to Get Something for Nothing will get you started.
Kathy is known for taking a $267.22 grocery bill down to one cent. The majority of her expenses are free and in this book she lets you in on her secret. She writes:

My favorite part of the book is when Kathy (more…)
