I’ve been craving chili ever since I went camping last month so on Monday I cracked open my copy of The Best of America’s Test Kitchen. I adapted their recipe for light turkey chili slightly but was surprised how easy it was to make. It took 20 minutes to get everything in the pot, then cooked for 1 hour and 40 minutes. The recipe served six hungry people and cost me about $10.65 to make. (more…)

As an addendum to my recent posts on cheap holiday vacations and cheap holiday travel tips, I just discovered a very cool map on the travel site FareCompare.com.
Plug in your starting location, your budget, the month you want to travel, and the map shows you exactly where you can afford to go across the globe.
You can narrow your search by choosing activities (ski, beach, golf), specific airlines, or price per mile. It’s easy – and fun – to think about all the trips you can take across the world. Chile! New Zealand! Turkey!
The map pulls fares published in the past four hours, so prices are accurate. Prices include taxes and fees, but not checked baggage costs, which vary greatly by airline. Flight prices may not be available on all days of the week. The map is for departure points in the U.S. only.
Thanks, Dan!

Store shelves are going directly from candy corn to candy canes. There are less than two months left in 2010 and several looming holidays require attention, attendance, and acts of kindness. So much to do. So little time and money. How is one to preserve the spirit of the season and one’s holiday budget?
Now is the time to take stock of the next two months and decide what is important. Spending Thanksgiving with your family 3,000 miles away? Hosting a large gathering for the holidays? Giving out lots of presents? No presents?
Make a cup of coffee or tea, grab a note pad, and find a comfortable seat. It’s time to start planning the rest of the year. (more…)

First, a note about how I selected the contest winner.
I used Random.org to pick a random winning number, then matched the winning number to the comment with the same number. How are comments numbered? The first comment gets the number 1, the second comment gets the number 2, and so on. I repeated this process to select three runner ups.
And the winner is… (more…)

TV subscribers have been dropping their cable subscription more frequently in the past few months, according to a recent USA Today story. Those canceling their contracts are not switching to other cable companies or satellite TV. They are simply going without.
The change is not solely because of technological advances like the ease of watching TV and movies online, but the economy.
“The price of cable TV has risen to the point where it’s simply not affordable to lots of lower-income homes, “said an analyst to USA Today. “And right now there are an awful lot of lower-income homes. The evidence suggests that what we’re seeing is a poverty problem rather than a technology phenomenon.”
I have never had cable TV and don’t understand why (more…)

It’s too late to get a cheap holiday flight, right? Wrong, says Christopher Elliott, a syndicated travel columnist who consistently gives me good travel advice. There’s lots you can do to save money on holiday travel this Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas.
Looking for a cheap holiday vacation? There are a handful.
If you travel by car
More than 80% of holiday travel is done by car, Elliott says. “We’re a driving nation.” Check your tires’ air pressure, remove excess weight, maintain your car, drive steadily, and stick to the speed limit to get the highest miles per gallon.
Buy the cheapest gas with the Cheap Gas! app, which Coupon Cravings recommends. The app compares station prices by proximity to you. (more…)
I’ve never spent Christmas away from home so I’m fascinated with trading in a fragrant douglas fir for a margarita on the beach or map of Paris. If you are considering traveling instead of visiting family (or perhaps traveling with family), there are many affordable places to visit. Getting a cheap flight is possible, too.
