I am new to your site so maybe you’ve discussed this idea in the past but here’s what we’re doing to save for a big vacation: This idea is not original either – I read it in an AARP article – but it is really working for us.
We are planning on heading to Australia in February for our 25th Anniversary. Realizing both airfare and spending money are the big ticket items for us (we’re trading our timeshare – so very little cost involved in the housing end) I read this idea and we have really employed/enjoyed it. (more…)
My go-to recipe when I’m tired or don’t even have 30 minutes to make dinner is a farmer’s salad, so named because I throw everything that grows into it! If you want something heavier, check out my recipe for chicken stew with carrots or browse my dinner recipe page.
I make a filling meal out of salad by adding plenty of protein (garbanzo beans, leftover meat cut up, rinsed black beans), and pair my salads with toast, a roll, or a warm tortilla. I like to share updates on what produce is in season produce because it helps me reduce my grocery bill. In season veggies and fruit are some of the cheapest foodstuffs you will find in your grocery store! Watch for rising prices on summer produce.

RelishRelish.com is geared towards parents who would love to have a personal chef, but can’t afford it. The site is run by two moms, so it’s practical and easy to use. Their aim is to help people prepare healthy meals and eliminate the chore of organizing grocery lists.
Each week the site suggests new dinner recipes that take 30 minutes or less. Recipes range from vegetarian meals, freeze-now-and-cook-later dinners, and tons of kids-friendly offerings that don’t include the word “nugget.”
Pick and choose what recipes you want, then the site automagically creates a grocery list based on the recipes you selected. While the cost varies, in general five dinners and sides cost less than $90 per week. Stick to the list and you’ll really save!
