Roasted chilis add a special flavor but can be subbed for roasted red peppers. Credit: Hanumann/Flickr
I got this recipe from Sunset and modified it slightly to add more ingredient options so you can work with what you have in the fridge. The first time I made this recipe I was impressed with how simple it was but how fancy the flavors here. The chilis lose most of their spice in the cooking, but you can sub them out for roasted red peppers if you like. This dish takes about 30 minutes to prepare.
Ingredients
2 Tbsp canola oil, split
4 Anaheim or poblano chilies (in season right now) or (more…)

Credit card use is decreasing, while debit card use is on the rise. The culprit may be the hard economic times, but that is not the only factor.
“People are being extraordinarily cautious because of concerns about a double-dip recession, and jobs not being returned,” says a recent USA Today story. “Consumers are opting for debit cards, because they’re ‘one of those mechanisms that allows you to spend what you have.’”
A Federal Reserve Board report states that credit card borrowing fell (more…)
A bizarre story came from longtime reader Ellen:
On a completely unrelated note, I’m wondering your thoughts on a warranty on footwear! Yes, the other day while shopping for sneakers at (Dick’s Sporting Goods), I was actually offered a warranty on my sneakers “in case something went wrong with the product.”
My mouth agape, I simply uttered, “Um no.”
I know sales associates are trained to push certain promotions, i.e. Toys R Us, loves pushing their batteries and even the post office clerks now try and sell boxes and passport applications, when you simply just want one stamp…but…
A warranty on footwear?
I wish I had asked the price.
It might just cover my next cheap pair of sneakers!
Are extended warranties a good value – or another scam to rip us off? (more…)

How often do you wash your hair? Would you wash it less if you knew how much money it could save you?
I used to wash my hair everyday. Now I wash it every three or four days. I slowly began stretching out the days in between washings after my sister told me my body – and the oil it produces – would naturally adjust. Fewer washings = less time spent cleaning and drying my overly thick hair. (Having wet hair for hours in the winter is not fun. If I blow dry it, it gets dry and frizzy. If I air-dry it, I get cold. If I put a hat on, it dries flat.)

The season is changing and so will many women’s hair color, but the cost doesn’t have to make you want to pull your locks out. Many of us are heading back to school or the office and are craving a fresh look. Here are some tips for inexpensive hair color and care. A previous post covered how to get a cheap hair cut.
Highlights – I speak from personal experience: don’t do this at home or risk looking like a skunk. Instead, have a friend recommend a professional and get highlights done at a salon. For touch ups, you can use a similar color from the drugstore and do it at home. You can also try (more…)

Out of all of the things I never wanted to learn about, at the top of my list was CARS! But I spent the last three months learning how to get a great deal on a “new” used vehicle for my family.
I tried in every way imaginable to get someone else to take responsibility. But it became apparent that anyone else would head to a used car lot, find a car that they “loved” and could afford, and buy it without digging deeper into the history, maintenance and reliability of the car. I finally gave in and began what will be known as “my year of living dangerously learning about cars.”
Although my search is not over yet, I have gained valuable knowledge about how to buy a used car. (more…)

This post is brought to you by Printerbox, supplier of Epson ink cartridges, Jet-Tec ink cartridges and more.
If you are in the market for a new printer and like to shop at Staples, look for a machine that has multiple ink cartridges. Here’s why.
When I moved across the country on a budget I had to choose between spending $50 to check my print/copier/scanner as airline baggage, buying a new one when I arrived (also about $50), or testing out an old clunky one that my roommate agreed to let me use. My decision to try out the old machine turned out to be very savvy.
Why would I hesitate to use the old printer? My roommate was not sure it worked because it was out of ink. I would have to buy brand new ink cartridges just to test it out. To my great annoyance, the printer required FOUR cartridges, three for color and one for black and white. Plus, the old timer, above, is not anywhere as sleek and sexy as my California printer.
I decided to hedge my bets that the old machine was in working condition and (more…)

A new friend shared a little known fact about shopping at Costco. Members can purchase Costco cash cards and give them to non-members. Recipients can get a free one-day membership to use the cash card on gas or warehouse items. The cards are also good online. Cash cards make great gifts and they are useful for employees, students living away from home, and friends who are dying to buy 20 pounds of strawberries. Ways to shop at Costco without a membership.
