One of my favorite places to save is in the kitchen. I can literally taste the savings! Bad puns aside, here are 13 ways I save money once I purchase my groceries. What are your best kitchen money savers?
1. Revive brown sugar. We’ve all been caught between a rock and hard brown sugar. Toss your sugar in a bag with a piece of bread, close it and wait a day. The sugar will absorb the moisture in the bread, which turns stale. End result? Pliable sugar.
2. Uses for old vegetables. Veggies that are soft or aesthetically past their prime are excellent in soups and sauces. Both dishes hold an aura of cooking competence but are one of the easiest things to prepare. Just toss in with liquid, set on a low temperate, and wait. Casseroles also do a great job of (more…)

I recently helped a friend of mine rid herself of the stuff in her storage units along with the monthly rental expense. For the Bargain Queen, this has been an eye opening educational experience.
Public storage facilities are popping up everywhere and the move-in specials and seemingly low rental rates appear to be a tantalizing and easy solution to having more stuff than room.
It is so tempting to take your stuff and shove it into a storage unit and promise to “go through and toss it out when I have time.”
Believe me, you will NEVER (more…)

The preppy look is back this season, among other fashion trends. Gals and guys are sporting their polo shirts, pressed khakis and sweater vests. The look that traditionally screams “expensive!” does not have to cost you a whole lot. Here’s how to get the look on a budget.
Start by asking if older siblings, parents or grandparent might have clothes and accessories in their closets that fit the fad – and won’t cost you a dime. Perhaps you can help them clean ot their closets in the process or give new glory to under appreciated clothes. If you plan to tailor the clothes to fit, make sure your relative is giving it to you. Don’t modify a loaner.
Check the sale racks at preppy stores like Lacoste, Ralph Lauren, J.Crew, Nautica or plunder your local thrift stores. If you’d rather not wait, try stores that sell similar clothes and accessories for a fraction of the cost. Here is where I would shop: (more…)

Readers had mixed feeling about whether or not I should use a $20 Target gift card that requires me to set up a wedding registry (I’m not engaged), but ultimately provided an ethical solution.
Laura’s perspective is that I’d be earning the money. “I would use it. You did go through the trouble of opening the mail, reading the exclusions, etc. Besides, if you are willing to go through the hassle of using the registry, I say go for it.”
Evie, who is boycotting Target, said even if she did patronize the store it wouldn’t be worth her time. “Since I won’t shop at Target, if I got something like that it the mail, it would go in the trash. Besides, I don’t think it would be worth the time to set up a registry.”

I received a coupon for a $20 Target gift card yesterday with one big hitch. It is only valid if I create a Target wedding registry with at least 10 items on it. I’m not entirely sure how I got on a list of future brides (I’m not engaged) but I do sign up for a lot of stuff to test out deals for work.
Now that I have the coupon for a $20 Target gift card, I’m tempted to use it. The offer expires Oct. 24, 2010 so I don’t have long to decide. I’m leaning towards doing the right thing – recycling it or sending it to a friend who got engaged three weeks ago.
On the other hand, no where on the coupon does it say I have to be engaged. And there are plenty of registry-esque items I’d like to buy, including storage shelves for the attic and basement, sheets, and an electric griddle for pancakes. (I can never get them right in a regular frying pan.)
Is the fact that Target sent me the coupon enough to justify my use of it? Target could have vetted me (and other recipients) more carefully to weed out folks who are not actually betrothed.
How would you interpret the rules on the back of the coupon, which read:
Limit one coupon or offer per transaction. Void if copied, scanned, transferred, purchased, sold or prohibited by law. GiftCards and tax will not be included in determining purchase total. Free GiftCard not valid as payment on this purchase. Terms and conditions apply to GiftCards. Maximum retail value $20 for free GiftCard. No cash value. To redeem: take this coupon and a printout of your registry to Guest Service and any Target store. (emphasis theirs)
Lori had a frustrating coupon story:
I am not sure if you know the answer to this, but I read your blog and I thought that you might know! I have been shopping at King Soopers for 5 years and yesterday, for the first time, they refused to let me stack manufacturer coupons with store coupons. I got a ‘tude from the checkout girl as she handed me back all of the coupons that wouldn’t work.
Do you know if there has been a change in policy? I was annoyed at the time and ended up paying more than I had intended, because I was flustered and just put the coupons back in my organizer. Thanks for any info that you might have!!
Lori, I don’t shop at King Soopers (the nearest store is 30.6 miles away) but it sounds like your grocery store (more…)
